Stevedoring firms Hutchison Ports and DP World Australia have told employees that they will not be able to work at their terminals at Port Botany in Sydney from 30 August if they have not had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The directives have been introduced in response to New South Wales government rules that require authorised workers residing in 12 Sydney local government areas to be vaccinated if they work outside their LGA, unless their employer uses rapid antigen testing. The Port Botany terminals are located within one of the 12 hotspots.

New South Wales has recorded 124 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, including 48 people who were active in the community while they were infectious. There are 118 people across NSW in hospital with the coronavirus, including 15 who are under the age of 35. Premier Gladys Berejiklian says people under the age of 40 should get the AstraZeneca vaccine if their GP advises them to do so, rather than wait for the Pfizer jab. Meanwhile, Australian Medical Association president Omar Khorshid says lockdowns may not be enough to contain the Delta variant, so the AstraZeneca vaccine may be a good option for people under the age of 60.

Saxon Smith, president of the Australian Medical Association’s New South Wales (NSW) branch, says it will lobby fiercely against any move to allow pharmacists to carry out more vaccinations. The NSW branch director of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, Steven Drew, had claimed that such a proposal had been given in-principle support by State Health Minister Jillian Skinner. However the Government and pharmacists remain at loggerheads over the extent of qualifications needed in order to offer the service. It has been successfully trialled in Queensland
