Seven West Media’s coverage of the 2015 Melbourne Cup was streamed live via its Plus7 app some 340,000 times during the race itself and 488,000 times over the course of the day. Seven expects to attract a larger live streaming audience for the 2016 Melbourne Cup, and the broadcaster will offer exclusive live video content via Facebook, including interviews and behind-the-scenes stories. Seven will not stream the race live on Facebook, although it will provide content for Twitter’s live coverage of the Cup.

Amazon has declined to comment on speculation that its Prime Video subscription video-on-demand service could be launched in Australia in November 2016, to coincide with the global debut of "The Grand Tour". The program is hosted by former "Top Gear" presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Amazon may opt to delay the local launch of its SVOD service until 2017, to enable it to build up a larger range of original and licensed content.

Cheerio to Presto: so how many subscribers are up for grabs – and can Foxtel persuade them to Play?

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 6-Oct-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 1.5 per cent of Australian homes (143,000) subscribed to Presto in the six months to August 2016. Some 77 per cent (or 110,000) of the homes with access to Presto also have at least one other pay TV/SVOD service; 55 per cent of Presto homes also have Netflix and 27 per cent have Stan, while 48 per cent have Foxtel – with almost all of them using the traditional set-top box, not the streaming Foxtel Play. Meanwhile, analysis of SVOD households based on Household Life Stage shows that half of homes with Netflix or Stan are in the Young Singles, Young Couples and Young Parents segments, while the majority of homes that have Foxtel are Mid-Life Households (33 per cent) or Older Households (28 per cent).

Foxtel will discontinue the Presto subscription video-on-demand service by the end of January 2017, after agreeing to buy out joint venture partner Seven West Media. The pay-TV group will focus on its internet-based Foxtel Play service, which will be relaunched with a bigger range of packages and lower prices. Foxtel Play will be pitched at consumers who want access to premium content but are reluctant to take out a Foxtel broadcast TV subscription.

Foxtel has revealed plans to launch a lower-cost version of its Play streaming service in December 2016. The new product is expected to be offered at a similar price to rival subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Stan, and Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh is confident that it will primarily be taken up by non-Foxtel households rather than current customers. Meanwhile, Foxtel has commissioned a new TV version of "Picnic At Hanging Rock" and secured a new content deal with HBO.
