OzTAM will officially launch its new digital TV ratings system in early February 2016. It will measure the number of people who view TV content online and via portable devices. The launch of the Video Player Measurement system has coincided with a decline in the amount of time people spent watching traditional broadcast TV. The Australian Multi-Screen Report shows that this fell from an average of about three hour per day to just two hours and 49 minutes in the December 2014 quarter.

Netflix has started to block Australian customers from accessing content that is exclusively available to people in the US. It is estimated that prior to its local launch in 2015, about 340,000 Australians accessed Netflix in the US using an unblocking service or virtual private network, and many still do so as some Netflix content is not available in Australia. Unblocking services are already working on ways to bypass Netflix’s new policy.

Original article by Darren Davidson

Changes to cross-media ownership laws remain on the Australian Government’s agenda, and Nine Entertainment Company CEO Hugh Marks argues that reforms are necessary for local companies to compete effectively against offshore groups like Netflix. He notes that the subscription video-on-demand provider is not subject to the same regulations and does not pay a licence fee. Marks adds that lack of reform will threaten jobs in the industry and the production of local content.
