The Australian Government may relax the visa requirements for skilled overseas workers who are hired on temporary contracts. The reforms would allow companies to recruit foreign workers on a "short-term mobility" visa rather than the existing 457 visa for skilled workers. Senator David Leyonhjelm has proposed a number of measures to stimulate growth in Australia’s tourism sector. He would like the age limit on working holiday visas to be raised or removed. Holiday-makers who work in tourism jobs should be able to extend their visas by 12 months. He believes that people employed in restaurants should not be paid more when they work on a Saturday or Sunday

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says the Government is concerned that some foreigners have abused the significant investor visa scheme, which gives them access to Australian residency on the condition that they invest a minimum of $A5 million in Australia for four years.
