Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has used a speech to the Australian National University to accuse Western nations of selectively applying international law. He said that they have been happy to condemn Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but have been equally happy to remain silent over the ongoing bloodletting "of innocent men, women and children of Gaza; he also claimed that much of the West has been happy to allow the "Israeli occupation forces" carte blanche in the murderous rampage on the Palestinians" for more than 60 years.

Australia has provided around $730 million in military aid to Ukraine to date, while it has sent off its latest rotation of soldiers to the UK to train Ukrainian infantry. Farewelling the soldiers on Monday, acting Defence Minister Matt Thistlethwaite said the federal government is committed to providing support to Ukraine to the "end of 2024 and beyond" against what he labelled "the illegal and unprovoked aggression and invasion by Russia". Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says support for Ukraine has to be a priority.

NATO grateful for Australia’s support

Original article by Hans van Leeuwen
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 11 : 12-Jul-23

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has met with NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the sidelines of the defence alliance’s leaders’ summit in Lithuania. Albo emphasised the federal government’s strong support for Ukraine, noting that despite Australia’s distance from Europe the invasion has had an impact on the nation’s inflation rate and its economy. Stoltenberg in turn said NATO is "extremely grateful" for Australia’s support, noting that what happens in Europe matters for the Indo-Pacific region. Albanese will participate in a special session on the Indo-Pacific region on Wednesday. Meanwhile, some media reports have suggested that major NATO member nations believe that Ukraine cannot be offered a pathway to full membership even when the war ends.

Thousands flee homes as collapse of dam is blamed on Russian forces

Original article by Dan Sabbagh, Julian Borger
The Guardian – Page: Online : 7-Jun-23

The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of deliberately engineering the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka hydro-electric dam. The dam is located in the part of Kherson region that is controlled by Russia’s occupying forces, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleges that it was mined and blown up by the Russians. He has also described the dam’s destruction as an act of terrorism, while European Union officials have suggested that it might constitute a war crime. The dam’s collapse has resulted in thousands of people being evacuated, and prompted concerns that it may take decades to recover from the resulting environmental disaster. Ukrainian officials say there is no immediate risk to the nearby Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, although there are fears about the plant’s long-term future.

Hawkei armoured cars bound for Ukraine war in Australian support deal

Original article by Peter Hartcher
The Age – Page: Online : 6-Jun-23

Defence Minister Richard Marles says he expects that details of Australia’s new support package for Ukraine will be announced soon, with its four-wheel-drive armoured car known as the Hawkei said to be on top of Ukraine’s wish list. Locally made, the Hawkei is designed to be fitted with the same Norwegian-American air defence system that protects the White House. It is likely that details of Australia’s latest package for Ukraine will be released by the time Prime Minister Anthony Albanese travels to a NATO summit in Lithuania in July. Australia is also said to be negotiating a deal to supply Ukraine with its fleet of F/A-18 Hornets, which have been retired from service by the RAAF; however, this would require approval from the US government.

The Guardian – Page: Online : 16-Mar-22

Officials in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv have imposed a 35-hour curfew as Russian air strikes on the city continue. At least five people have been killed in the latest bombardment, amid indications that Russia has shifted its focus to targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure in the besieged city. There have also been further air strikes on the city of Kharkiv, while Fox News has advised that two of its employees – a producer and a cameraman – have been killed in an air strike near Kyiv. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has conceded that his country will not become a member of the NATO defence pact. He has also warned that the Russian "war machine" will inevitably target more countries if it is not stopped.

Dozens killed and injured as Putin bombs Ukraine

Original article by Charles Miranda, Jennifer Dudley-Nicholson, Merryn Johns
Herald Sun – Page: Online : 1-Mar-22

Russia has launched a major missile and rocket attack on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv. Dozens of civilians are believed to have been killed and many more have been injured in the bombardment, which is believed to have included unguided Grad rockets and banned cluster bombs. There have been reports that Russian generals have been ordered to take Kharkiv at all costs, although Ukraine says it still holds the city. Meanwhile, a 5km convoy of Russian tanks and troops is advancing on Kyiv. There have also been reports that Russian mercenaries are in Kyiv and have orders to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky and his government. Zelensky says he is sceptical about peace talks with Russia on the border with Belarus. The first round of talks have ended without a resolution, but they are expected to resume in coming days.
