The former Coalition government’s offshore detention regime for asylum seekers is under renewed scrutiny following the release of sworn evidence given by the Department of Home Affairs’ assistant secretary Derek Elias. It has been revealed that Elias raised concerns about the waste and misuse of taxpayers funds via the so-called Pacific Solution policy in evidence given to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in his claim for workers’ compensation. The federal government has yet to release a report on the offshore processing regime by the nation’s former director-general of security, Dennis Richardson.

The data is sent in the same PDF format in which it is displayed on the department’s website. The department has declined to comment on the cost of the contract, details of which have yet to be published on the government’s AusTender website. The issue of bonus payments for employees of government business enterprises is under renewed scrutiny following the release of data on the bonuses received by employees of NBN Co. A total of 3,819 employees shared the $77.5m worth of cash bonuses that NBN Co paid in 2020. Some 2,865 employees who earn between $100,000 and $200,000 received an average bonus of $13,000 each; in contrast, those on annual salaries of more than $200,000 received an average bonus of $49,743. Shadow communications minister Michelle Rowland says the ongoing problems with the national broadband network mean that the "excessive" bonuses are not justified.

MPs are concerned about the level of money that federal government departments are spending on consultants and contractors. Almost 5,000 consultants are employed across government agencies, and the Community & Public Sector Union estimates that $A380 million could be saved each year by replacing them with permanent public servants. Accenture and the four major accounting firms are estimated to have made more than $A3 billion over a five-year period from federal government contracts.
