Data from Investments Trends shows that the number of high net worth investors in Australia rose by 43,500 in 2014, to 443,500. They collectively control some $A1.6trn worth of investable assets. The nation also boasts 580,000 people with investable assets of between $A500,000 and $A1m. The research also shows that just 40 per cent of high net worth investors obtained professional advice in 2014

Australia’s 50 highest-earning athletes boasted a combined income of $A164m in calendar 2014, compared with $A158m in 2013. Basketball player Andrew Bogut has topped "BRW" magazine’s Top 50 sports earners list for a fourth year, with total income of $A16.2m, ahead of golfer Adam Scott with $A15.5m. The list includes 13 cricket players, including Shane Watson ($A4.5m) and Michael Clarke ($A4m)

The personal wealth of the CEOs of Australia’s four major banks has been boosted by the strong gains in the banks’ share prices. Commonwealth Bank CEO Ian Narev now holds some $A30m worth of shares in the bank, while the shares and options of ANZ Bank CEO Mike Smith are worth around $A61m based on the bank’s current share price. Forbes deflates Clive’s much-loved billions

Mining magnate Gina Rinehart remains Australia’s wealthiest individual, according to "Forbes" magazine. The US publication estimates Rinehart’s wealth to be $US11.7bn. Real estate developer Harry Triguboff is second on the list of Australia’s 50 richest people, with net wealth of $US5.6bn. However, Clive Palmer failed to make the list, which required wealth of at least $US550m ($690m)

Rich Listers lose billions as sharemarket slides

Andrew Forrest, James Packer and Kerry Stokes belong to a group whose losses over the past 12 months exceeded $A5 billion combined.
