Former Supreme Court Justice Michael Murray has proposed giving new powers to Western Australia’s Supervised Release Review Board. Under his plan, the board would be able to impose conditions on parents of young offenders who are about to be released from detention. Corrective Service Minister Joe Francis supports the plan, which now be considered by the Youth Justice Board

Minister denies plan is social engineering

The Western Australian Government has been criticised over public housing sales. After it was revealed that 55 state-owned properties are valued at over $A1 million, Housing Minister Bill Marmion said that high-value properties are usually sold. Shadow housing minister Fran Logan said that selling the properties was social engineering to keep poor people out of wealthier areas. He said that the land should be rezoned for public housing

Heat is on for tanning beds ban

Terry Slevin of the Cancer Council Western Australia and Michael Gannon of the Australian Medical Association have urged the State Government to ban commercial tanning beds. Slevin notes that the state is the only jurisdiction in Australia that has not yet imposed a ban. Health Minister Kim Hanes believes that the health concerns about sun beds justifies a ban, but he says the Government has not made a final decision on the issue

Western Australia’s Department of Corrective Services and the organised crime squad will form a specialist task force to address the issue of organised crime in the prison system. The task force has been set up in response to a police investigation dubbed "Operation Ulysses", which revealed that prison officers have been smuggling drugs into the state’s prisons. Three prison staff were arrested as part of the investigation
