The first auction of 5G millimetre wave spectrum will be undertaken in March, with each bidder to be given the opportunity to buy up to one gigahertz of spectrum. Telstra head of networks Nikos Katinakis says that one of the telco’s first uses for the spectrum it intends to purchase will be for 5G fixed wireless products that will aim to compete with the NBN. He says Telstra will target these products at locations where "the NBN does not provide what the customer wants", and that it will target neighbourhoods rather than individuals

Huawei Australia directors have refuted suggestions that the Chinese telco’s participation in the construction of a 5G wireless network raises national security concerns. They have written to federal MPs arguing that Huawei supplies equipment for the mobile networks of Optus, Vodafone and TPG, and they have warned that the company could potentially withdraw from Australia if it is excluded from the 5G project. Huawei has also dismissed concerns about its links to the Chinese government, stressing that it is a privately-owned company.

Sources have indicated that Australia’s security and defence agencies have recommended against allowing Huawei to bid for contracts to build the nation’s 5G wireless networks. The Federal Government is expected to make a decision on the 5G contracts very soon, and Huawei has previously been excluded from providing equipment for the national broadband network due to national security concerns. The Chinese telco supplies equipment for the 4G networks of Optus and Vodafone, while Huawei’s John Lord recently noted that the company employs about 750 people in Australia.

Telstra has advised that that its net profit for the first half of 2017-18 was down 4.9 per cent to $A1.7 billion, while total revenue increased by 5.9 per cent to $A14.51 billion. CEO Andy Penn says the global telecommunications sector is going through a period of cyclical change. Customers are seeking to extract more value and data from their plans, while telcos’ margins are under pressure. However, Penn is optimistic that the introduction of 5G services will help to revive growth in the sector.

Telstra is intending to run 5G trials during the upcoming Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, with the intention of offering full 5G services in 2019. Rival telco Optus had announced on 2 February that it intends to start offering 5G services in 2019. Meanwhile, telecommunications Paul Budde says 5G represents a threat to the NBN when it comes to those internet users that purchase the more basic user packages, although NBN spokesperson Tony Brown does not believe this is the case.

Telstra will offer its mobile customers free data on 14 February 2016 to compensate for an outage which took its mobile networks offline for about three hours. The telco will undertake an investigation into the outage, which occurred when a Telstra engineer accidentally switched off a core node without complying with the appropriate procedures. COO Kate McKenzie has given assurances that a similar incident will not occur again. The outage also affected emergency services and companies that use Eftpos terminals.

Telstra will launch its WiFi 4GX Advanced III mobile broadband hotspot technology on 29 September 2015. A demonstration of the technology on 16 September showed that it was able to deliver a download speed of 500Mbps and an upload rate of 40Mpbs. Telstra says the technology can potentially achieve download speeds of up to 600Mbps. In contrast, the download speed for the fibre-to-the-node technology to be used by the national broadband network is estimated to be 100Mbps.
