Aberdeen Asset Management’s chief investment officer Anne Richards regards herself as an "activist investor" with regard to the issue of women directors. She believes that greater boardroom diversity can reduce investment risk, but says mandatory quotas for female directors is not necessarily the solution. Richards will launch Australia’s Women on Boards 2015 Diversity Index on 16 March 2015

NAB faces $4.3m harassment suit

National Australia Bank has declined to comment on a pending claim for damages by a former executive of its JBWere wealth management business. Antonia Thornton alleges in her statement of claim that she was subject to discrimination and harassment after revealing in 2009 that she was pregnant. Thornton also alleges that she was effectively forced to resign, as the discrimination continued after she returned from maternity leave

No maths widens the gender pay gap

Advanced mathematics and science courses are only studied by about 13% of boys in Year 12 at Australian high schools. However, for female pupils the rate is even lower at just 6.6%. The Graduate Careers Australia warns that this accounts for the lack of women in professions commanding high remuneration, for example engineering. Of the 9.4% discrepancy between average male and female wages, about half can be explained by the under-representation of women in such fields. It will also make it harder to reach the Business Council of Australia’s target of half of all executive positions being held by women in 2024
