Amanda Vanstone says the best way to get more high-quality women into politics is to have fewer ‘vaguely incompetent men’ in Australian politics, with Vanstone being a former Howard government minister. Opposed to quotas for women in politics, Vanstone was speaking as Labor celebrated the 30th anniversary of its affirmative-action rule that imposed quotas for women, with women making up 52.4 per cent of the current Labor federal caucus.

Liberal MP Keith Wolahan has conceded that the party is falling short of its target on female representation in federal parliament. Speaking on the ABC’s Q+A program on Monday night, Wolahan said the Liberals are ready to preselect women but must do more to ensure that this occurs. He has also stressed that the preselection process must be democratic, and that Liberal candidates must be chosen by the party’s members. The Liberals may come under further scrutiny after McKinsey consultant Simon Kennedy was chosen as its candidate in the seat of Cook, which was recently vacated by Scott Morrison. There had been a push within the party to select Gwen Cherne to contest the seat at the upcoming by-election.

The National Party is on track to have up to six female representatives in the new parliament, compared with two previously. Senator Bridget McKenzie says the Nationals have exploded the myth that only women from the left of politics want to be in parliament. Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Michael McCormack says its female MPs have gotten into parliament on their merits and without the need for quotas.

The federal government is already under criticism for the lack of female MPs within its ranks. However, it is possible that it could suffer from an even greater gender imbalance after the upcoming election. It has been suggested that just four of the 21 female Coalition candidates who have been endorsed for either the House of Representatives or the Senate since Scott Morrison became Prime Minister in August are considered to be guaranteed of winning their seat.

Andrew Bragg has advised that he will not be seeking Liberal Party preselection for the seat of Wentworth, despite having been one of the early favourites to win. The seat has been made vacant by the resignation of Malcolm Turnbull, with Liberal members due to vote on his replacement on 13 September. Recent polling that Bragg himself paid for has indicated that the Liberals would have a four per cent better chance of winning Wentworth if it had a female candidate; Bragg says he commissioned the polling as he had heard Prime Minister Scott Morrison had wanted a women candidate to contest Wentworth.

Daisy Turnbull Brown agrees with former foreign minister Julie Bishop that it is "unacceptable" that less than 25 per cent of federal Liberal MPs are female. Turnbull Brown, who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, says it is not just parliament’s "kid/family unfriendly" nature that puts women off wanting to become MPs, but its toxic culture as well. Although not a big fan of the idea of quotas, Turnbull Brown says they may be the only way to boost the number of female federal Liberal MPs.
