Demographer Peter McDonald says total employment grew by 730,000 between 2011 and 2016, with migrants accounting for 600,000 of the new jobs. McDonald, from the University of Melbourne, says it is incorrect to state that migrants are stealing jobs from people who were born in Australia, nor are they taking jobs from those who are unemployed. Australia’s annual migrant intake is upwards of 200,000 a year, and former prime minister Tony Abbott believes that immigration levels need to be reduced.
