The latest Melbourne Institute Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey has found that self-employment has been on a gradual decline since the survey began in 2000. This appears to be at odds with the general perception that the "gig economy" is becoming an increasingly important component of the Australian economy. The percentage of adult-aged workers who are self-employed and who have employees has fallen from 8.6 per cent in 2001 to 5.5 per cent in 2016. Interviewing for the HILDA survey is conducted by Roy Morgan.
