Labor urged to hold fire on super rise

The superannuation guarantee is currently slated to increase to 12 per cent in 2025. Labor had originally legislated for the super guarantee to reach this level in 2019, and employers’ groups have cautioned against any move to bring forward the Coalition’s revised target date. Jenny Lambert of the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry says any such move could dampen wages growth and would be too costly and disruptive for many businesses. Labor’s employment spokesman Brendan O’Connor stresses that changes to the super guarantee would depend on the state of the Budget.

Geofabrics alleges that the Queensland division of the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union breached right-of-entry laws when four officials attempted to gain access to its factory in Ormeau. The industrial textile manufacturer’s staff are represented by the Textile Clothing & Footwear Union of Australia, which recently merged with the CFMEU. TCFUA secretary Michele O’Neil is said to be "aghast" at the CFMEU’s actions. The case will be heard by the Fair Work Commission and Queensland’s industrial relations commission.

The CSIRO’s annual report shows that it undertook an internal review of its IT security following a data breach that was first disclosed in late 2013. In November of that year, the Australian Federal Police began an investigation into the unnamed Chinese scientist who was at the centre of the suspected breach, after he failed to turn up for work and subsequently returned to China. CSIRO has since invested millions of dollars on upgrading its cyber security and information systems.

The general consensus of economists is that the Reserve Bank of Australia will not tighten monetary policy until 2019, after the cash rate was left unchanged at 1.5 per cent on 3 April. RBA governor Philip Lowe again stressed that there is likely to be a gradual fall in the unemployment rate and a rise in the inflation rate to the central bank’s target range. He also said low growth in wages is likely to persist for some time. The RBA has not adjusted official interest rates since August 2016.

Data supplied to the banking royal commission shows that a significant proportion of home loans sold by Aussie Home Loans in 2015 were those offered by its parent company, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Up to 39.7 per cent of the mortgages that Aussie Home Loans sold by volume in 2015 were from brands owned by the bank, including Bankwest and Aussie Select. Likewise, 37.5 per cent of mortgage loans sold by value were from CBA-owned brands. A key issue for the royal commission has been whether mortgage brokers are acting in the interests of their customers or the banks.

Analysts say that gaining Foreign Investment Review Board approval for its $A13.5bn bid for Santos will be the greatest hurdle for US-based Harbour Energy. Santos has granted due diligence after the private equity-backed firm offered $A6.50 per share, compared with an initial approach in August which was pitched at $A4.55 per share. Harbour Energy has flagged plans to expand Santos’s drilling program in the Cooper Basin and increase domestic gas supply if its bid succeeds.

Gas crisis looms as Bass Strait dries up

Original article by Glenda Korporaal
The Australian – Page: 19 : 29-Mar-18

A report from the Australian Energy Market Operator forecasts that Victoria’s gas production will fall to 187 petajoules in 2022, compared with 435 petajoules in 2017. Damien Sanford of AEMO has warned that Victoria faces a gas supply shortfall from 2022 unless new sources of gas are found. The Bass Strait gas fields are rapidly being depleted, and AEMO says Victorians could face the prospect of having to restrict gas consumption on days of peak demand from 2022.
