New Century Resources is to rehabilitate the Century zinc mine in far north Queensland, with the mine, previously owned by MMG, having ceased production in late 2015. Should the rehabilitation of the Century mine be done in a profitable manner, New Century Resources may then look to resume mining at the site, with nearby deposits having shown promise. With the share price of New Century Resources having risen by 400 per cent over the last eight months, MMG CEO Jerry Jiao says he has no regrets about the 2017 deal that saw MMG pay New Century Resources to take the mine off its hands.

A report by international tax experts Jack Mintz and Philip Bazel notes that Australia’s company tax rate is currently the fourth-highest among OECD member nations. However, they warn that Australia will be ranked second within two years unless the tax rate is reduced, while the nation risks losing global capital inflows. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says the Federal Government is open to compromises with crossbench senators Derryn Hinch and Tim Storer in return for their support for the company tax cuts bill.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce says airfares from Australia to Britain have continued to decline over the history of the "kangaroo route". With Qantas having just launched its first non-stop flights from Australia to London, Joyce notes airfares to the UK are now equivalent to a week’s average wage, whereas as recently as the 1960s they were equal to 22 weeks average wages. He says that new technologies are helping Qantas to keep its airfares competitive on Australian to Europe services.

Foxtel is working on an "over-the-top" streaming video service for Fox Sports, which could allow consumers to view a limited selection of sports channels without taking out a pay-TV subscription. Should the new video-on-demand services be launched, it is expected to have unique branding to distinguish it from Foxtel and its existing product range. Foxtel is keen to attract consumers who have previously not been interested in taking up a pay-TV subscription.

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 26-Mar-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the December 2017 quarter, has found that 26.1% Australians of all ages (or 5.2 million people) intend to study or do a course in the next 12 months. Some 72.7% of 14-24 year olds (2.3 million) intend to study or do a course. However, significant proportions of older age groups are intent on furthering their education. Over a quarter of 25-34 year olds (1.06 million Australians) and over a fifth of 35-49 year olds (990,000 Australians) intend to study or do a course in the next 12 months. In addition, nearly 690,000 Australians aged 50+ intend to do so. Analysis using Roy Morgan’s Helix Personas consumer segmentation tool shows that members of the Metrotechs and Today’s Families communities are most likely to intend to study, while Aussie Achievers are least likely to be considering studying in the near future.

The International Cricket Council has fined Steve Smith his entire match fee for the current Test against South Africa in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal. Smith will also be banned from playing in the final Test of the series. Batsman Cameron Bancroft has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee after admitting that he had attempted to change the condition of the ball using adhesive tape. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says it "beggars belief" that the Australian cricket team has cheated, while Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist are among the former players to have expressed outrage over the team’s conduct.

Football participation stabilises with more women playing

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 26-Mar-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that the number of Australians aged 14+ who play football (of any code) has fallen from 2.2 million in the year to December 2013 to 19.5 million in the year to December 2017. While the number of football participants has fallen by 12.1 per cent overall, Rugby Union has recorded the biggest fall (down 29.4% to 178,000 participants), followed by soccer (down 10% to 1.36 million). Australian Rules is down just 4.3% to 604,000 participants, and Rugby League is down 8.7% to 327,000 participants. Against the trend of the overall decline in participation is the rising number of women participating in all forms of football. Analysis shows there are now 548,000 women participating regularly or occasionally in any of the four leading football codes, up 4.4% since 2013.

Commonwealth Bank executive Clive van Horen has conceded that the bank erred in the case of problem gambler David Harris. Harris has told a public hearing of the banking royal commission how the bank had continued to give him credit cards and had extended his credit limit even though he had admitted to being a problem gambler. Van Horen told the commission that the bank has since tightened its rules in relation to giving credit to customers who appear to have gambling problems.
