DowDuPont’s executive chairman Andrew Liveris has warned that uncertainty over Australia’s energy policy is adversely affecting foreign investment intentions. He recently participated in a round-table discussion in the US with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, state and territory leaders and the CEOs of major US companies. Liveris told the meeting that while Dow is keen to further invest in Australia, this is dependent on a competitive and reliable energy market. He also urged bipartisan support for the Federal Government’s National Energy Guarantee.

Shorten vowed to kill Adani mine

Former Australian Conservation Foundation president Geoff Cousins held private meetings with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in January. They discussed the potential environmental impact of Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland, and Cousins says Shorten repeatedly stated that Labor will revoke Adani’s coal mining licence on environmental grounds if it wins the next election. Shorten’s stance on the Carmichael mine has wavered over the last year, and Cousins argues that he needs to resolve Labor’s policy regarding the controversial project.

US media giant Comcast is offering Stg12.50 per share for British pay-TV company Sky. Sky’s shares peaked at Stg13.55 in response to the Stg22.1bn ($A39.5bn) bid. Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox had previously offered Stg10.75 per share to assume full ownership of Sky. The Comcast bid also has implications for Walt Disney Company’s deal to acquire the bulk of Fox’s assets, including its stake in Sky. Fox had rejected Comcast’s offer in late 2017 to buy most of its assets for $US60bn in favour of the deal with Disney.

Australian tennis legends such as Neale Fraser and Pat Cash has criticised the International Tennis Federation’s proposal for a major overhaul of the Davis Cup tournament. Although the trophy would still be called the Davis Cup, the tournament itself would be renamed the World Cup of Tennis Finals. It would played at a neutral venue over one week in November rather than the traditional format of home-and-away ties for each competing nation. In addition, each match would feature just three sets instead of the five at present.

The long-running legal dispute between Seven West Media and former employee Amber Harrison has returned to court. Seven alleges that Harrison was in contempt of court by posting tweets about the media group despite being subject to a suppression order. Seven is seeking a declaration to this effect from the Supreme Court of New South Wales, although sources have indicated that the company is unlikely to enforce a costs order against her. Harrison left the media group in the wake of an affair with CEO Tim Worner.
