Rio Tinto digs in as Vale raises iron ore grades

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 : 19-Feb-18

Brazilian iron ore miner Vale has advised that the average iron grade of its ore rose to 64.3 per cent in the December 2017 quarter. Vale has been progressively increasing the quality of its iron ore, due to factors such as increased output at its higher-grade mines and a corresponding fall in production at mines that yield lower-grade ore. Although Vale has indicated that it aims to further lift the average grade of its iron ore, Rio Tinto has ruled out similar action at its Australian iron ore mines.

Plans to cut company tax responsible – Morrison

Original article by Andrew Tillett
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 19-Feb-18

Treasurer Scott Morrison has downplayed concerns expressed by Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe about the potential impact of the Federal Government’s proposed company tax cuts. Morrison has stressed that Budget projections have already taken into account the long-term effect of the tax cuts, adding that the Government will not implement any policies that could threaten its timetable for returning the Budget to surplus. The Government also wants to include personal income tax cuts in the May 2018 Budget, again without risking the target date for a surplus.

Westpac estimates that there is a 60 per cent chance that the Reserve Bank will increase official interest rates in 2018. There had been general consensus in financial markets early in 2018 that a rate rise before the end of the year was almost certain, but expectations have been dampened by factors such as market volatility and the latest inflation data. However, other major central banks are tightening monetary policy, prompting some experts to warn that the Reserve Bank may need to increase rates more aggressively at some stage.

Cricket Australia hopes to gain nearly $A1bn for its next broadcasting rights deal, compared with $A600m for the five year-deal that expires in 2018. However, free-to-air TV network executives have warned that the industry cannot afford a large increase in the cost of broadcasting rights. Some have noted that the new rights deal between European pay-TV company Sky and the English Premier League is significantly lower than the previous deal. There is speculation that a free-to-air network will bid for the cricket rights in partnership with Fox Sports.

Reducing taxation and improving health benefits are major issues

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 19-Feb-18

A special Roy Morgan SMS survey, which was carried out from 9-12 February, shows that 22% of Australian electors mentioned Taxation issues, including lower taxes and tax reform, as the leading issue the Federal Government could address that would most benefit electors and their families. This is unchanged since the last time this question was asked in May 2010. A further 17% of electors mention Health issues, including private health insurance and Medicare/bulk billing (down 1% from May 2010), and an unchanged 13% mention Social welfare and the aged. Two issues now mentioned by 12% of electors are Quality of government/politicians and Reducing utilities/electricity/gas prices. Analysis of issues by voting intention shows that L-NP supporters (33%) are far more likely to mention Taxation-related issues than ALP supporters (24%). In contrast, ALP supporters (11%) are more concerned with general health issues than L-NP supporters (5%).

Costco & Kmart battle for 2017 customer satisfaction award

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 19-Feb-18

Roy Morgan’s Single Source survey shows that Costco (88.9%) had the highest customer satisfaction rating among Australian discount department stores in November 2017, ahead of Kmart on 88.3%. Costco (with five monthly victories) and Kmart (four victories) are locked in a tight battle for the 2017 Roy Morgan Discount Department Store Customer Satisfaction Award. Target, the defending Discount Department Store of the year, has lost ground over the past year and been unable to build on an early monthly victory in March. Target’s customer satisfaction rating of 87.5% in November is down 0.4% points on a year ago. Also losing ground in the year to November 2017 are Steinhoff Asia-Pacific’s two discount department stores – Harris Scarfe on a customer satisfaction rating of 85.9%, down 1.6% points on a year ago, and Best & Less on 85.2%, down 2.2% points.

2.5 million car insurance policies at risk of switching

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 19-Feb-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that more than one in five (2.54 million) Australians aged 14+ with comprehensive car insurance either changed companies or renewed with the same company after approaching others in the year to December 2017. This represents an increase of nearly 400,000 over the last four years. The survey also shows that 78.5% of comprehensive car insurance policies were automatically renewed without holders approaching another company, compared with 80.9% in 2013. Meanwhile, the proportion of comprehensive policy holders who approach another company before they renew with their existing company has increased from 12.1% in 2013 to 15.5% in 2017.

High satisfaction with private health insurance claims

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 19-Feb-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey of Australians aged +14 with private health insurance has found that overall satisfaction with private health insurance funds was 71.0% in the year to December 2017, compared with 73.6% in 2016. The survey also shows that the satisfaction level of people who made a health insurance claim was 88.8% in 2017. The high level of satisfaction with claims suggests that the decrease in satisfaction is more likely the result of increased premiums rather than problems with claims. Only around 5% of fund members switch private health insurance funds due to problems with claims, with the main reasons given by over 70% for changing funds are the high cost and increased premiums.

Shorten’s policies shrink small businesses

Original article by Craig Laundry
The Daily Telegraph – Page: 64 : 16-Feb-18

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has outlined plans to tie the minimum wage to 60 per cent of the median wage. As well as potentially putting up to one million small companies out of business, his plan is one similar to that rejected by the Fair Work Commission in 2017, with the FWC being an independent body that Shorten himself helped to set up. Australia already has the second-highest minimum wage in the OECD, with 3.3 per cent increase in 2017 being the largest since 2011. Australian small businesses provide 4.7 million jobs, and account for $A378 billion in outputs; Shorten’s plan would spell disaster for the sector.
