The Australian Taxation Office is taking a new approach when it comes to ensuring that the nation’s richest people are not avoiding their tax obligations. Whereas the ATO’s previous policy in this area was to rely on tax reviews and audits, its new strategy involves personal interviews with Australia’s richest people. The ATO’s current focus, which is led by Will Day, is on Australia’s top 320 private groups. Those within this group have either $A500 million or more in assets or at least $A350 million in turnover.

PM defiant in escalating China row

Original article by Laura Tingle
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 11-Dec-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull made it clear on the weekend of 10-11 December that he thinks China has been trying to interfere in Australian politics. Some China analysts have suggested that Turnbull might have been wiser to voice his concerns over the issue in private rather than in public, and that he might have been trying to use the issue to score domestic political points. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop believes that the relationship between Australia and China is strong enough to survive the current controversy.

Mag ads in Vogue despite Instagram hype

Original article by Dana McCauley
The Australian – Page: 26 : 11-Dec-17

The University of South Australia’s Professor Byron Sharp says traditional forms of advertising are still more effective than social media marketing. This is demonstrated by the fact that fashion designer Kristian Chase generated just two online sales of a swimsuit that two Instagram influencers promoted, despite the fact that one post attracted about 11,000 "likes". In contrast, Chase generated sales of nearly 700 in one month by placing a full-page advertisement for the swimsuit in the print edition of "Vogue" magazine.

Scott Lorson, the CEO of pay-TV company Fetch, says the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission should have released a statement of issues before advising that it will not oppose the proposed merger between Foxtel and Fox Sports. Other pay-TV providers and telcos have also expressed concern about approval of the deal, which the ACCC concluded would not result in a substantial lessening of competition.

Japanese look past Glencore for coal supply

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 20 : 11-Dec-17

New Hope Coal CEO Shane Stephan says there is growing concern among Japanese coal buyers about Glencore’s growing dominance of the Australian coal industry. He adds that this is prompting coal buyers to look at alternative suppliers such as New Hope and Whitehaven Coal. Australia will account for about 55 per cent of Glencore’s global coal production of 124 million tonnes in 2017, and the company’s share of Australia’s coal market will rise if its deal to acquire 49 per cent of the Hunter Valley Operations mine from Yancoal is approved.

Kevin Gao, the Australian business manager of China Energy Reserve & Chemicals Group, stresses that supplying the Western Australian gas market will be the Chinese group’s priority if its takeover bid for AWE Limited succeeds. He has downplayed concerns that CERCG aims to primarily supply the Chinese market via its $A463m hostile bid. Gao adds that gas from the Waitsia gas field in the Perth Basin could potentially be shipped to Australia’s east coast if supply is surplus to demand in WA. CERCG is offering $A0.73 per share for AWE.

Melbourne desired for holidays but Hobart growing fastest

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 11-Dec-17

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2017, has found that more than 14.8 million Australians aged 14+ would like to spend a holiday within Australia in the next two years. This figure is virtually unchanged from a year ago, when 14.9 million Australians indicated a desire to take an Australian holiday, but down slightly from a peak of over 15.2 million in September 2015. The Roy Morgan Holiday Tracking Survey shows that over the last two years Melbourne has retained top spot as the capital city Australians would most like to visit. In 2017, over 4.25 million Australians indicated that they would like to visit Melbourne, down slightly from 4.5 million in 2015. Sydney is again comfortably in second position with just under 2.4 million would-be visitors in 2017, down slightly from 2.5 million in 2015. Meanwhile, Hobart has experienced the fastest growth of any capital city and is now in third place for domestic holiday-goers with 1.75 million prospective visitors, up 8.7% from 1.6 million in 2015.

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 11-Dec-17

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that satisfaction with Australia’s private health insurers declined to 71.0% in October 2017, down by 0.2% points for the month and 3.4% points below the same time in 2016. This level is now well down on the peak of 76.4% recorded in June 2015 and is the lowest satisfaction rating since 2010. The top fund was Teachers Health with 83.4% satisfaction, followed by TUH Health Fund (82.8%), Defence Health (82.8%), CBHS (82.1%) and Health Partners (80.9%). The only funds to show improvements in satisfaction over the last 12 months were TUH Health Fund (up 3.7% points) and Australian Unity (up 2.1% points). Less than half the members of the major health funds would be "highly likely" (with a score of 8 to 10 on a ten point scale) to recommend their fund to friends or colleagues.

Unions to urge ALP to ease anti-strike rules

Original article by Ewin Hannan
The Australian – Page: 6 : 8-Dec-17

ACTU secretary Sally McManus has warned that a landmark High Court ruling will make it more difficult for unions to take protected industrial action. The court ruled that lawful industrial action during enterprise bargaining negotiations is not permissible if previous orders of the Fair Work Commission had been breached during the bargaining process. McManus says Australia’s rules on the right to strike are "complex and onerous", and she argues that reforms are needed to make them consistent with the International Labour Organisation’s standards. The ACTU will lobby the Australian Labor Party to pursue changes to the right-to-strike regime.
