Optus CEO Allen Lew has downplayed suggestions that it may allow customers of rival telcos to subscribe to its exclusive coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Lew says Optus is not yet ready to announce details of its World Cup packages. Optus will be hoping that the Socceroos win their upcoming qualifying match against Honduras, although Lew notes that the World Cup will be popular with many dual nationals in Australia. Australian Conservatives leader Senator Cory Bernardi will table a bill on 13 November that would remove a ban on nuclear power plants, along with nuclear processing and enrichment. His bill follows on from a call by former prime minister Tony Abbott in October that the construction of nuclear power plants should be allowed. Bernardi notes that Australia has ample uranium supplies, but at the moment is just exporting it.

RBA can just sit back and watch the Fed

Original article by Karen Maley
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 30 : 13-Nov-17

The latest monetary policy statements of the Reserve Bank and the Federal Reserve used identical wording to describe the current state of the Australian and US economies. The Federal Reserve is widely tipped to increase official interest rates again in December, which will allow the Reserve Bank to observe the impact of a rate rise in a low-inflation, low wages growth environment before taking any action of its own. There is no pressing need for the Reserve Bank to act, given that the unemployment rate remains well above that of the US and is not expected to fall in the next two years.

CBA’s super shareholder to target director

Original article by James Frost
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 & 18 : 13-Nov-17

AustralianSuper is believed to be planning to vote against the re-election of Andrew Mohl to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s board at its AGM on 16 November. Mohl, who is a member of the bank’s risk committee, is one of three directors who are seeking re-election. AustralianSuper’s opposition to his re-election is said to be in response to the CBA’s money-laundering scandal, which followed a number of other scandals at the bank in recent years. However, AustralianSuper will not vote against CBA’s remuneration report.

The ABC is poised to abolish its traditional TV and radio content divisions in favour of a cross-platform approach. The public broadcaster is expected to retain its existing news and regional content divisions and create a new one which will produce content in a range of genres. The restructuring is not expected to result in any job losses, although changes to the ABC’s management structure is likely. The ABC recently overhauled its news division, while its science unit was restructured in 2016.

Australian households’ net wealth now over eight trillion dollars and growing

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 13-Nov-17

Roy Morgan Research’s newly released report "Superannuation and Wealth Management in Australia" shows that Australian households have increased their net wealth by 42.1%. over the last four years, from $5.703 trillion to $8.135 trillion. The report also shows that currently 53.1% of household net wealth is made up of equity in owner-occupied homes, up from 48.1% in 2013. Superannuation, Pensions/Annuities in total now account for 27.4% of the total, down from 28.6% in 2013. The other components of net wealth, which include bank accounts, managed funds (excluding superannuation) and direct investments, have fallen from 23.3% in 2013 to 19.5% in 2017. The report is unique because it looks at superannuation in the context of all other assets and debt that make up the true financial position of Australian households, rather than the usual single product or "silo" approach.

It’s Official: Australians support assisted dying or euthanasia

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 13-Nov-17

A special Roy Morgan Snap SMS Survey has found that 87% of Australians aged 18+ (up a significant 18% since May 1996) are in favour of "letting patients die when they are hopelessly ill and experiencing unrelievable suffering with no chance of recovery". In contrast, just 10% (down 7%) say doctors should "try to keep patients alive" and 3% (down 11%) are undecided. In 1946, when Roy Morgan first asked this question the Australian population was divided: 42% said "let the patient die", 41% said "try to keep the patient alive" and 17% were undecided. Since then support has increased fairly consistently. Analysis of supporters of various political parties shows that large majorities of supporters of all parties now support "letting the patient die", led by 91% of Greens voters, 88% of National voters, 87% of ALP voters and 86% of Liberal voters.

PM seeks TPP backing as Peru agrees trade deal

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 10-Nov-17

Peru will abolish almost all tariffs on Australian imports under a free-trade agreement between the two nations. Australian farmers in particular are set to benefit from the trade deal, with sheep meat, wheat and almonds among the products that will be tariff-free from the outset, while the tariff on beef will be abolished within five years. Australia accounted for just $US5.3m of the $US4.6bn worth of agricultural products imported by Peru in 2016. Meanwhile, the Federal Government is optimistic that the Trans-Pacific Partnership will proceed without the US.
