Liberal MP Ian Goodenough has expressed concern about the limited focus of religious protections in a private members’ bill to legalise same-sex marriage. He says some Coalition MPs are developing a separate bill on same-sex marriage that will provide greater protection for religious freedoms if the majority of Australians support marriage equality in the postal survey. Meanwhile, Australian Conservatives founder Cory Bernardi says resolving parliament’s dual citizenship crisis should take priority over the issue of same-sex marriage.

The Queensland Government continues to attract scrutiny over its dealings with India-based Adani regarding its $A16.5bn Carmichael coal and rail project. The Government struck a deal with Adani in May to defer some royalties payments, but it has refused to disclose any details of the deal. However, the Australian Labor Party had stated in 2015 that it would not make any "secret deals" if it won the state election.

Over 3 in 4 Australians are consuming magazines across print and online

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 10-Nov-17

Roy Morgan Research has released the Australian Magazine Readership report for the 12 months to September 2017. A total of 12,577,000 Australians aged 14+ (62.9 per cent) read print magazines, up 2,000 from a year ago. The audience reach of magazines is extended to 15,005,000 Australians aged 14+ (77.8 per cent) when you include magazine reading online (either via the web or an app). The withdrawal of major publishers from audited circulation results for magazines in 2016 means Roy Morgan’s readership results are the only truly independent measure of magazine performance now available. "Coles Magazine" remains the most widely-read print magazine, with an average readership of 3,975,000 per issue (up 8.3 per cent). Meanwhile, nine of Australia’s 10 leading magazines ranked by cross-platform audiences retain a significantly larger readership via their print editions than their digital offerings – a clear contrast to their print newspaper cousins.

ACTU president Ged Kearney says the Federal Government does not have a mandate for industrial relations reform while doubts remain about the eligibility of some MPs to be in parliament. Five bills relating to unions are currently before the Senate, but Kearney argues that they should be shelved until the dual citizenship crisis is resolved. Unions have raised the prospect of a legal challenge if any of the bills are passed.

The dual nationality crisis seems set to overshadow the final session of federal parliament for the year. Nick Xenophon Team MP Rebekha Sharkie has indicated that she is seeking legal advice as to whether her renunciation of British citizenship was completed before she was elected to parliament. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has received independent legal advice which suggests that four Labor MPs are likely to be disqualified from parliament if they held British citizenship when they nominated for the 2016 election.

Santos places Narrabri gas back in frame

Original article by Matt Chambers
The Australian – Page: 17 & 20 : 10-Nov-17

Santos has advised that the Narrabri coal-seam gas project is among three growth options for the listed oil and gas producer. The $A3.6bn project had been declared a non-core asset in 2016, but Santos has advised that it is now one of six core assets. MD Kevin Gallagher says the Narrabri project has become viable given concerns about domestic gas supply and prices, although he adds that it may take until late 2018 or early 2019 to secure environmental approval from the New South Wales government. Santos is also considering an expansion of the Papua New Guinea LNG plant and development of the Caldita-Barossa field in the Timor Sea.

The three partners in the Greater Sunrise LNG project have resumed negotiations with representatives of the Australian and Timor Leste governments. Processing gas from Sunrise at the Darwin LNG plant or a floating LNG facility remain the preferred option of the project’s partners, rather than a Timor Leste processing facility. Timor Leste Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri has indicated that his government would be open to options other than this one, although chief of staff Nelson Santos has stated that shipping gas to Timor Leste for processing must be considered.

Some 99.89 per cent of votes cast at a scheme meeting of Fairfax Media shareholders were in favour of the proposal to demerge Domain and list it on the sharemarket. Domain CEO Antony Catalano says it is right time to float the property listings business, adding that he is fully prepared for his new role as the head of a listed company. Fairfax will retain a 60 per cent stake in Domain, with the balance of the stock to be distributed to the media group’s existing shareholders.
