Jupiter Fund Management’s Asian Fund has sold down some of its Australian financial services investments, in part due to concern about South Australia’s proposed bank tax. If the tax is imposed, it has been estimated that it will cost the big four banks and Macquarie $A417 million over four years. The tax is due to be considered by South Australia’s upper house during the week ending 3 November, with the government needing the support of cross-bench MPs to get the tax approved.

ACTU secretary Sally McManus says growth in wages has reached a record low since Michaelia Cash became the Employment Minister. The union movement intends to highlight Cash’s ministerial record in an advertising campaign that will focus on Coalition-held marginal seats in Western Australia. Cash has continued to attract scrutiny after her office leaked details of a police raid on Australian Workers’ Union offices.

Cashed-up miners are facing a global grab for royalties

Original article by Peter Ker

A congressional committee recently approved the Brazilian Government’s proposal to increase the nation’s iron ore royalty rate from two per cent to four per cent. Vale has advocated increasing the royalty via a sliding scale, warning that a fixed rise could force it to reduce production at some mines. Chile in turn proposes a hike in its lithium royalty rate. Meanwhile, Lion Selection Group’s Hedley Widdup notes that mining companies would have reduced their exploration budgets if the Western Australian Government’s push to increase its gold royalty had succeeded.

US media giant 21st Century Fox has formally terminated its program supply deal with the Ten Network, which will no longer be able to broadcast popular shows such as "The Simpsons" and "Modern Family". Ten had suspended broadcasts of Fox shows earlier in October after negotiations for a new content deal stalled. Court approval is the final hurdle for the acquisition of Ten by Fox rival CBS Corporation. Ten will present its 2018 "upfronts" in early November.

‘Enormously damaging’: Hounsell strikes back at Lew

Original article by Sue Mitchell
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 21 : 31-Oct-17

Gary Hounsell has urged Myer shareholders to elect him and two other independent directors to its board at its AGM on 24 November. The election of Hounsell, who is Myer’s chairman-designate, and the other two directors is opposed by Solomon Lew’s Premier Investments, which is Myer’s largest shareholder. Lew has requested three seats on the Myer board, but Hounsell says this would amount to him controlling 43 per cent of non-executive director roles. Hounsell has told Myer shareholders that Lew appears to want to gain control of the company without them benefiting from any takeover premium.

Pollution controls lift FMG’s China discount

SteelHome analyst Du Hongfeng says Chinese demand for iron ore is likely to fall by 56 million tonnes between September 2017 and March 2018, as steel mills reduce output during the winter months. He adds that this will require Fortescue Metals Group to maintain its current iron ore price discount until at least March, in order to retain its market share. Fortescue’s iron ore with 58.5 per cent iron content is currently being offered at a 23 per cent discount to the benchmark price for delivery in November, while its iron ore with 56.3 per cent iron content is trading at a 40 per cent discount.

Institutional investors buy back into rally

Original article by David Rogers
The Australian – Page: 27 : 31-Oct-17

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index has gained 4.3 per cent so far in October, putting the local bourse on track for its best month since July 2016. Tony Brennan of Citigroup still expects the benchmark index to reach the 6,000-point level by the end of 2017. However, the market may face a number of headwinds. The S&P/ASX 200 Bank Index has risen by 3.5 per cent in October, but November is traditionally a bearish month for the sector. On the other hand, the resources sector is benefiting from the continued strength of commodity prices, while the growing prospect of tax cuts in the US should boost the earnings of companies with significant exposure to the US.

Westpac takes BBSW case down to the wire

Original article by Sally Patten, Jonathan Shapiro
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 30-Oct-17

National Australia Bank has joined the ANZ Bank in reaching a settlement with the Australian Securities & Investments Commission over rate-rigging allegations. The NAB is understood to have agreed to make a total payment of $A50 million, of which $A10 million would be seen as a penalty and $A20 million would go towards ASIC’s legal costs. The remaining $A20 million would be donated to a consumer protection fund. Westpac, the third bank involved in the bank bill swap rate case, is believed to be still considering whether it should challenge ASIC’s allegations in court.
