Drop in NXT support gives Nick Xenophon reason to ‘flee’ to SA

The High Court of Australia sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns has judged that South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon was not improperly elected to Federal Parliament at the 2016 Federal Election. However, Xenophon has signalled that he will be returning to State politics anyway, and an in-depth analysis of recent Roy Morgan poll results can reveal why jumping back to State politics may be the smart move for the NXT Leader. Support for the Nick Xenophon Team has dropped alarmingly since the Federal Election, with nationwide support now at just 0.5%, down from a Federal Election return of 1.9% just over a year ago. In Xenophon’s home State the drop has been even more significant with NXT support in October of only 9.5%, down 11.8% from last year’s South Australian State total of 21.3%. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that if NXT is to survive in Federal Parliament without its charismatic leader who has vowed to contest next year’s South Australian Election as the Leader of his new party SA Best, the outgoing Senator Xenophon must choose his replacement Senator wisely.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 9 : 30-Oct-17

A study of the Constitution suggests that any ministerial decisions made by the National Party’s Barnaby Joyce and Fiona Nash after 20 October 2016 could be legally challenged after the High Court ruled that they are not eligible to sit in parliament. Labor has made no secret of the fact that it plans to make life difficult for the Federal Government during Joyce’s absence from the House of Representatives. Joyce will have recontest his seat of New England in a by-election on 2 December.

Former Queensland premier Campbell Newman forecasts that One Nation could win up to 10 seats in the 2017 state election. He believes that an alliance with One Nation is the only way that Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls will be able to form government. One Nation’s state leader Steve Dickson is optimistic that the party will hold the balance of power in parliament after the election. Meanwhile, Nicholls says issues such as job creation and the cost of living will be the focus of the Liberal-National Party’s election campaign.

Citi predicts end of credit cards

Original article by Karen Maley
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 30-Oct-17

Michael Corbat, the CEO of US bank Citigroup, forecasts that it will not be too long before digital payments and the like replace credit cards. Given that Citigroup is the largest issuer of credit cards in the world, it is important that it is well-positioned to be part of whatever replaces them. Asked whether he supports plans by the Trump administration to scale back some of the laws introduced in the wake of the global financial crisis, Corbat says it is the way the laws are administered that needs to change rather than the laws themselves.

Original article by Sally Patten
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 19 : 30-Oct-17

Frontier Advisors has looked at four factors that are likely to determine a superannuation fund’s performance and compared to them to rates of returns over three years. The factors in question were fund size, fees, targeted return and level of risk taken. It concluded that funds that met the following criteria were most likely to achieve the best returns; they had assets of more than $A10 billion, charged mid-range fees and took mid-range risks, but aimed for higher target returns.

Watchdog backflips on super disclosure

Original article by Michael Roddan
The Australian – Page: 22 : 27-Oct-17

The Australian Securities & Investments Commission has delayed the introduction of parts of its new fee disclosure rules for superannuation funds. ASIC has concluded that more work needs to be done on two elements of the rules, namely the treatment of investment platforms, and costs in relation to property investments. ASIC chairman Greg Medcraft said the rules as they had been originally proposed could have led to inconsistent treatment of asset classes, resulting in a less than "level playing field".
