Millennials ‘happy to pay more’ for super

Original article by Alice Uribe

Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia CEO Martin Fahey says a super fund’s brand seems to be a higher priority for the Millennial generation than the fees they pay. Newer funds such as Spaceship and Grow Super have been popular with younger Australians, despite having fees that are higher than average. Fahey rejects suggestions that younger people are easily taken in by marketing hype, arguing that they are in fact "very sophisticated" consumers.

Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg will use the Council of Australian Governments meeting on 14 July to urge state and territory energy ministers to endorse the recommendations of the Finkel energy review. He will also urge Victoria and the Northern Territory to overturn their moratoriums on onshore gas development. Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio argues that Australia’s current level of gas exports is not sustainable and is resulting in higher prices for domestic users. She favours the introduction of a clean energy target rather than increased gas production in Victoria.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union has submitted a formal application to merge with two smaller unions. It wants the Maritime Union of Australia and the Textile, Clothing & Footwear Union to be exempt from a ballot, given their much smaller membership bases. Meanwhile, the Australian Mines & Metals Association has expressed concern about the potential impact of the proposed mega-union on the supply chain across the resources and energy sector. It will lobby the Federal Government to introduce laws requiring union mergers to satisfy a public interest test.

Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index reached an intra-day low of 5,665.6 points on 12 July 2017, before closing one per cent lower. The domestic bourse has shed 0.8 per cent so far in July, which may be a timely opportunity for investors to buy into the market. Meanwhile, although investors remain concerned about the political risk associated with US President Donald Trump, Citigroup believes that impeachment is unlikely despite the revelations concerning a meeting between Trump’s son and a Russian lawyer.

Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane has questioned whether a target of 2050 for the state to become carbon neutral is achievable. He says the target is "very ambitious" given that the state boasts high-intensity industries such as LNG and alumina production. He has urged the State Government to take into account the cost of the push for carbon neutrality. Macfarlane and the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association’s Rhys Turner have both called for a national approach to reducing carbon emissions.

AUSTRAC has concluded that Australian financial services providers such as banks should be doing more to identify and report financial transactions that may involve money laundering or terrorism financing. It contends that front-line staff in particular have a key role in identifying such activity, but they may not be doing so as they have a focus on client retention. AUSTRAC noted that 60 per cent of trading and settling organisations failed to report any suspicious activity in the two years to March 2016.

Roy Morgan Research’s Automotive Account Manager, Rob Heneghan, says analysis using the Helix Personas segmentation shows that one of the biggest drops in buying intention has been amongst the most affluent groups, Leading Lifestyles, which traditionally makes up the largest portion of new car intenders.

A new survey of property industry professionals shows that most expect a slowdown in residential property price growth in the next 12 months. The ANZ/Property Council of Australia index of house price growth expectations has fallen from 20.2 points to 4.3 points. The anticipated slowdown is particularly acute in Sydney, with house price growth expectations falling from 29.6 points to 1.7 points.
