Market Research Update – Page: Online : 29-Nov-16

As detailed in Roy Morgan’s latest State of the Nation report, Australia’s online shopping market is now worth an estimated $41.3billion per year. In the 12 months to September 2016, the Cross-Platform Audiences for Fairfax’s three leading mastheads were all more likely than average to shop online – and spent more when they did. The result is that Fairfax readers contribute far more than their fair share to the online shopping market. Some 21% of Australians (aged 14+) read the "Sydney Morning Herald" in print and digital, but this audience contributes 33% of all money spent online. Likewise, 15% read "The Age", but 20% of online shopping dollars come from them. Meanwhile, 7% read the "Australian Financial Review", but their value to the online shopping market is almost double, at 13%.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 18 : 28-Nov-16

The rally in the price of iron ore and coal during 2016 has boosted the earnings of BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, prompting speculation of capital management initiatives. However, Jason Kururangi of Aberdeen Asset Management argues that BHP should prioritise debt reduction and investment in new projects rather than returns to shareholders. Meanwhile, Jason Beddow of Argo Investments suggests that BHP and Rio should consider increasing returns to shareholders if commodity prices remain at a similar level in 12 months’ time.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 29 : 28-Nov-16

Research undertaken by Ebiquity on behalf of Think TV has found that fast-moving consumer goods companies receive a return of $A1.74 for each dollar they spend on TV advertising. In contrast, other forms of advertising have a negative return on investment for each dollar spent. The research, which is based on three years’ worth of advertising sales data for nine companies, also shows that 73 per cent of FMCG sales are base sales, while advertising accounts for just three per cent of sales.

The number of homes in Sydney’s central and eastern suburbs that are listed as short-stay accommodation on Airbnb now significantly exceeds the number of residential properties that are available to rent. Data from the University of Sydney’s Urban Housing Lab also shows that property owners can earn significantly more each month by letting their homes via Airbnb rather than seeking longer-term rental tenants.

Original article by Jake Mitchell
The Australian – Page: 23 : 28-Nov-16

The Australian Government may consider changes to the anti-siphoning list for sports broadcasts as part of its broader cross-media ownership reforms. Cricket Australia wants some one-day international matches to be removed from the anti-siphoning list, while Foxtel also advocates reform. Meanwhile, a further reduction in TV broadcasting licence fees is now more likely to be made in 2017. There had been speculation that the cuts may have been included in the mid-year budget update.

The Australian Government has agreed to introduce a proposed "security of payments" regime for subcontractors in order to gain Senate crossbenchers’ support for a bill to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission. Meanwhile, Senator Nick Xenophon will continue to push for increased water flows in the Murray-Darling river system.
