Pay-TV group Foxtel could start producing its programs in-house instead of simply licensing them, according to CEO Peter Tonagh. He says the cost of Foxtel’s content is continuing to rise, adding that the company intends to redirect more of its expenditure to exclusive content. Tonagh has also told the Screen Forever conference that there has been an increase in Foxtel subscriptions over the last 12 months, while Netflix subscriptions have fallen. He added that some consumers have cancelled their Netflix or Stan subscription after signing up to Foxtel.

China, Australia to push for new trade bloc

Original article by Lisa Murray
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 5 : 15-Nov-16

The Chinese Government hopes the demise of the proposed 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership will provide the impetus to proceed with the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific. China has been advocating the FTAAP trade bloc as an alternative to the TPP since 2014, as the nation was not a participant in the TPP. Australia also supports the FTAAP, according to Trade Minister Steve Ciobo. A regional trade agreement is likely to be on the agenda for the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation summit meeting in Peru.

AGL mulls gas import to beat supply crunch

Original article by Matt Chambers

The high domestic price of gas in Australia’s southeastern states and supply constraints may prompt AGL Energy to source natural gas from regions such as Asia, Europe or the Middle East. AGL will undertake a feasibility study on the proposal to build an LNG import terminal and processing facility, which would capitalise on a global oversupply of LNG. Shell Australia chairman Andrew Smith put forward a similar suggestion earlier in 2016.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will outline plans aimed at ensuring that employers give priority to hiring and training Australian workers rather than using the 457 visa system to fill labour shortages. Data shows that more than 95,000 temporary foreign workers are currently employed on 457 visas in 20 industries. The Opposition has also signalled that it will closely scrutinise any future free trade agreements to ensure that Australian workers are not disadvantaged.

Iron ore price surges, but producers wary of lifting output

Original article by Jessica Sier
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 31 : 15-Nov-16

The spot price of iron ore with 62 per cent content has risen by 102 per cent since early 2016, and 22 per cent so far in November. However, Daniel Morgan of UBS does not believe that the current price is sustainable, noting that iron ore miners have not increased their production capacity in response to the price surge. He adds that the iron ore market is unlikely to benefit from the election of Donald Trump, as the US is not an iron ore importer.

Australian-listed Kidman Resources has rejected claims by Marindi Metals that it has a binding agreement to acquire the Earl Grey lithium deposit. Marindi engaged in email discussions with Kidman in April 2016 regarding the acquisition of the latter’s lithium rights at its tenements in Western Australia, and it alleges that these discussions constitute a binding contract. Kidman subsequently commenced a drilling program which resulted in the Earl Grey discovery.

Pure-play iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group will finance its new fleet of bulk cargo vessels primarily via a $US473m loan from the China Development Bank Financial Leasing Company. Fortescue CEO Nev Power says it could potentially lead to more Chinese banks arranging structured financing deals in Australia. The fleet of eight very large ore carriers will cost $US556m in total, with delivery of the final one scheduled for mid-2018.

Gary Morgan’s comment on October unemployment: Donald Trump’s victory in US Presidential race shows electors believe real unemployment is higher than official statistics suggest

Original article by Gary Morgan, Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 15-Nov-16

US President-elect Donald Trump consistently stated during his campaign that real unemployment in the US was well over 20% or even 25% rather than the official Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) U3 figure – now at 4.9% for October 2016. In May Trump stated: "We have tremendous deficits. Don’t believe the 5 per cent. The real [unemployment] number is 20 per cent. The United States is dying from within, its domestic infrastructure is crumbling and successive administrations have wasted $5 trillion in the Middle East instead of using the money to create jobs and prosperity at home." Trump’s successful candidacy shows that many Americans agree with the new President that the official unemployment figures are considerably under-stated. There is a clear lesson for Australian politicians in Trump’s success.

Australians are more progressive and open to new things

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 15-Nov-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 41% of Australians aged 14+ now have a progressive viewpoint on social issues (up from 35% in 2006). More Australians now have a progressive viewpoint than a "Middle of the Road" attitude to social issues (down from 40% in 2006 to 36% today). A traditional outlook has also become less common, declining from 23% to 21% over the period. Meanwhile, 39% of Australians now agree they are attracted to new things and ideas, up from 34% ten years ago. Conversely, just 21% say they are cautious when it comes to newness – down from 24% a decade ago. As would be expected, people with a progressive viewpoint on social issues and an attraction to new things are also more likely to be early adopters. This in turn also makes them ideal trusted advisers.
