Next election may be two years away

Federal Parliament will resume on 30 August 2016, but it will not run for the full three-year term. Indeed, the timing of state elections in Victoria in November 2018 and New South Wales in March 2019 means that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could potentially call an election in August 2018, which is the earliest possible date for a federal election. His decision to opt for a double-dissolution election means the next poll can be held no later than mid-May 2019.

The Pokemon phenomenon: Australian 13 (and 30) year-olds becoming seven again

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 18-Jul-16

A Roy Morgan Young Australians Survey has found that 21 per cent of Australians aged 6-13 thought Pokemon was cool in 2015, a rate that has been fairly consistent over the past eight year. Pokemon’s popularity peaked among the youngest respondents, with the Japanese gaming and entertainment franchise considered cool by 27 per cent of six year-olds and 30 per cent of seven year-olds. Its appeal declined to 24 per cent of eight and nine year-olds, 21 per cent of 10 year-olds, 18 per cent of 11 year-olds and just 13 per cent of kids aged 12 to 13. However, with the release of Pokemon GO – a GPS-based augmented reality app – our continuing research over the rest of 2016 may well show that these older Australian kids (and their parents) could consider Pokemon cool again.

Rio tipped to sell off smaller divisions

Original article by Peter Ker

UBS analyst Myles Allsop suggests that Rio Tinto may seek to offload some of its non-core assets under new CEO Jean-Sebastien Jacques. Allsop says this could include its thermal coal, diamond and uranium mines, noting that they rarely receive much attention in Rio’s production reports. He also says Rio might also regard assets such as the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea as being non-core. Iron ore accounts for nearly 75 per cent of Rio’s earnings.

Fortescue Metals Group has significantly reduced its debt and ramped up iron ore production since Nev Power succeeded Andrew Forrest as CEO on 18 July 2011. Fortescue’s "C1" cost of production was around $US50 per tonne at the start of Power’s tenure, but some analysts believe that it may have come close to achieving its goal of reducing this to $US13/tonne in 2015-16. Fortescue exceeded its full-year production target of 165 million tonnes, with shipments for the fiscal year totalling 169.4 million.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has indicated that he may be open to changes to the Coalition’s superannuation reforms. The proposed changes will be discussed at the Coalition’s party room meeting on 18 July, with some backbenchers seeking a compromise on policies such as the $A500,000 lifetime cap on non-concessional contributions. Senator Nick Xenophon says the government must reconsider the lifetime cap and limiting concessional contributions to $A25,000 a year, arguing that they will not be approved by either the Senate or the Coalition’s own party room.

Only extreme event will trigger RBA QE

Original article by Mark Mulligan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 18-Jul-16

Perpetual Investment’s Matt Sherwood says geopolitical tensions would not be a sufficient reason for the Reserve Bank of Australia to implement quantitative easing. He argues that such measures would only be necessary if there were a major crisis such as the collapse of the Chinese economy. The RBA has developed a strategy for implementing quantitative easing, and Sherwood says this demonstrates that the central bank wants to be more prepared than it was at the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008.

Standard Media Index data shows that the gambling industry spend some $A63m on TV advertising in the first half of 2016, which represents year-on-year growth of nearly 20 per cent.
