I’m not done yet: Leckie’s return

TV industry veteran David Leckie says he intends to seek another role in the media industry when his 13-year tenure at the Seven Network ends in late July 2016. Seven usurped the Nine Network – Leckie’s previous employer for more than two decades – as Australia’s top-rating free-to-air network during his tenure, which included a stint as CEO. Leckie remains upbeat about the outlook for traditional media, arguing that so-called "digital disruption" has in fact led to increased interest in broadcast TV.

Many Australian employees are mentally detached from their work. Recruitment firm Robert Half conducted a study of 300 CFOs and finance directors which shows that 49 per cent of small to medium businesses detected “inner resignation” among employees. Large organisations reported up to 54 per cent of workers being in this category. Robert Half Asia Pacific senior MD David Jones advises companies to take steps to re-engage workers, as poor morale has a negative impact on productivity.

Australian banks are likely to experience pressure on their profit margins because of low interest rates. Frank Mirenzi of Moody’s states in a report released on 14 July 2016 that household debt has increased as a result of rising house prices and low income growth. At present, the big four banks have an "Aa2" rating from Moody’s and an "AA-" rating from Standard & Poor’s.

The reintroduction of legislation to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission will be one of the Federal Government’s priorities when parliament resumes. However, at best the Coalition is likely to have 79 seats in the lower house and 29 in the Senate, which means it would need the support of at least five crossbenchers if the ABCC bill is put before a joint sitting of parliament.

Concern rises over proposed super ceiling

The Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees has warned that the Federal Government’s proposed lifetime cap on non-concessional superannuation contributions could be difficult and costly for the industry to implement. It has suggested that capping annual contributions at $A50,000 would be easier for super funds to administer. The AIST has also expressed concern about the impact that reducing the cap on pre-tax contributions would have on older super fund members.

BHP set to miss iron ore target as tough year continues

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 & 20 : 15-Jul-16

In April 2016, BHP Billiton scaled back its forecast for iron ore shipments from Western Australia in 2015-16 to 260 million tonnes, compared with original guidance of 270 million. However, BHP may have failed to achieve its revised target. Iron ore shipments from Port Hedland for the financial year totalled 454.2 million tonnes, with rival producers estimated to have accounted for about 196 million tonnes. This would suggest that BHP’s share of iron ore shipments was around 258 million tonnes.

Jobless rate edges up and fewer hours worked

Original article by Jacob Greber
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 6 : 15-Jul-16

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the nation’s unemployment rate rose from 5.7 per cent to 5.8 per cent in June 2016. Some 38,400 full-time jobs were created during the month, although this was offset by the loss of part-time positions, resulting in a net gain of almost 8,000 jobs. ANZ Bank economist Felicity Emmett says the low jobs growth and low inflation will most likely prompt the Reserve Bank to reduce the cash rate in August.
