Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner has cautioned the Australian Government against taking a "piecemeal" approach to media reform. He has told a Senate committee that relaxing cross-media ownership laws could allow the Ten Network to be acquired by pay-TV group Foxtel. This in turn could eventually result in more sporting events being removed from the anti-siphoning list and shown exclusively on pay-TV. Worner has also called for broadcasting licence fees to be scrapped or reduced.

The Australian Government’s proposed media reforms should consider the option of merging the ABC and SBS, according to Nine Entertainment Company CEO Hugh Marks. He argues that a review of the two public broadcasters should be part any media reform agenda, noting that they have changed significantly since they were initially established. ABC MD Mark Scott recently called for to be merged with SBS.

Air New Zealand has indicated that it may divest its 25.9 per cent stake in Virgin Australia Holdings to provide capital for its own growth strategy. Ailevon Pacific Aviation Consulting’s Oliver Lamb says there has been speculation in the aviation industry as to which of Virgin’s three largest shareholders would sell out first. Virgin shares closed at $A0.34 on 30 March 2016, valuing Air NZ’s stake at about $A310m. Virgin could potentially become a takeover target if Air NZ sells its stake.

Turnbull will propose a new intergovernmental taxation arrangement. Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison announced on 30 March 2016 that ASX Limited will no longer have a monopoly on clearing and settlement activities. Elmer Funke Kupper’s recent resignation as CEO of the stock exchange operator makes it ill-prepared for the coming changes. Morrison said no licences will be granted during a transition period. The ASX has therefore 18 months to prepare itself for a new regulatory regime.

Investors to get $9b dividend bonanza

Original article by Vanessa Desloires
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 & 20 : 31-Mar-16

Australian companies are expected to pay shareholders around $A19bn in interim dividends during March and April 2016. Fund managers estimate that almost $A9bn worth of dividends will be paid in the final week of March, including some $A3.4bn worth of dividends from the Commonwealth Bank. Meanwhile, CommSec’s Craig James warns that the current dividend payout ratio of 106.3 per cent of profits is not sustainable. Many shareholders are expected to reinvest their dividends in equities, particularly given the low returns from assets such as bonds.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that eight per cent of Australians aged 14+ with a Vodafone mobile service have travelled by Uber in the last three months, just ahead of the seven per cent of Optus or Virgin mobile customers. The survey, which was carried out in the six months to December 2015, also shows that only four per cent of Telstra’s mobile users travel by Uber. Meanwhile, Uber travellers made around 3.7 trips each with the service in the last three months, which is equivalent to an estimated 7.3 million passengers from July to December 2015. Optus mobile customers accounted for around 2.3 million of these passenger trips, while Telstra mobile customers made an estimated 1.8 million passenger trips.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 30-Mar-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 935,000 Australians aged 14+ went to Western Australia for their last domestic holiday, which is 127,000 higher than two years ago. The survey, which was carried out in the year to December 2015, also shows that people whose last holiday was in WA were 131 per cent more likely than the average domestic traveller to have visited at least one winery/vineyard. They were also 93 per cent more likely than the average Australian holiday-goer to have visited a wilderness area, 53 per cent more likely to have gone fishing or hunting, 48 per cent more likely to have been to a National Park and 46 per cent more likely to have gone bicycling. On the other hand, people whose last holiday was in WA tended to be below-average in terms of participation in more urbane holiday pursuits like going to art galleries, visiting a casino and going to a theme/entertainment park.
