Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox is among the business leaders who have criticised the Federal Court’s ruling that casual employees who work regular hours are entitled to annual leave. The court found that a Queensland truck driver who worked on a fly-in, fly-out basis could not be considered to be a casual worker under the Fair Work Act due to his "regular and continuous" employment. The court’s decision has been welcomed by the ACTU and the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union.

Ticehurst supports lowering RBA inflation target

Original article by Vesna Poljak

Several leading economists have urged the Reserve Bank of Australia to scale back its inflation target. Andrew Ticehurst of Nomura Australia argues that the RBA’s midpoint of the 2-3 per cent target range is higher than that of its counterparts in the US, New Zealand and the UK, while he notes that some Asian central banks have reduced their inflation target without any adverse impact. Ticehurst says the RBA should "fine-tune" the inflation target by reducing it to around two per cent.

Senior National Australia Bank executives held a meeting with Australian Securities & Investments Commission officials at the bank’s headquarters on 30 July. NAB executives subsequently fronted the banking royal commission in early August, after featuring prominently in its previous hearings. An NAB spokesman has indicated that the meeting with ASIC had been organised in late 2017 and such meetings are held regularly. Documents released by the inquiry on 15 August show that ASIC has accused NAB of a range of civil and criminal offences in relation to the "fee for no service" scandal.

Official data shows that Australia’s unemployment rate fell from 5.4 per cent to 5.3 per cent in July, to its lowest level since late 2012. More than 19,000 full-time jobs were created in July, offsetting the loss of 23,200 part-time positions, and the labour force participation rate eased from 65.7 per cent to 65.5 per cent. The official unemployment rate has been consistently around the 5.5 per cent level for much of the last year, but the Reserve Bank recently forecast that it will fall to five per cent in 2020.

The Workplace Gender Equality Agency estimates that the national gender pay gap for full-time employees fell to 14.6 per cent in 2017-18, compared with 15.3 per cent in the previous financial year. The full-time average weekly earnings of men was $1,678.40, compared with $1,433.60 for women. The agency’s director Libby Lyons says the national gender pay gap could be eliminated if all employers undertook a pay audit and took appropriate action.

Sky ban like a Soviet gag: Fifield

The Victorian Government’s decision to ban Sky News content from video screens on Melbourne train station platforms has been criticised by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield. Fifield has likened the state’s ban to the censorship policies of the Soviet Union, and says it undermines media reforms which are aimed at ensuring the viability of Australia’s media industry. The ban was imposed in response to a Sky News interview with far-right extremist Blair Cottrell, which Sky claims was not broadcast on train station platforms.

The national energy guarantee continues to divide the federal government, amid revelations that Labor has been given a copy of the legislation while Coalition MPs have yet to see it. George Christensen and Andrew Hastie are the latest Coalition MPs to signal their opposition to the inclusion of the Paris agreement’s carbon emissions reduction target in the NEG. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has sought to quell dissent by flagging government intervention to prevent the three largest energy generators and retailers from manipulating electricity prices.

Yancoal Australia has reported a 2018 interim net profit of $361m. The result was boosted by the contribution of Rio Tinto’s thermal coal mines in New South Wales and a sharp rise in the price of thermal coal since the deal was struck. About $130m of the interim profit will be returned to shareholders via dividend payments, which equates to about $0.003 per share.

Doubts over crackdown on black economy

Original article by Tom McIlroy
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 12 : 16-Aug-18

Keith Swan of KPMG has questioned whether a Federal Government initiative will be effective in combatting the black economy. From mid-2019, companies that tender for federal contracts worth more than $4m will have to provide a statement of tax record from the Australian Taxation Office. Swan says that amongst other things, this requirement could potentially bar companies from tendering if they have had tax disputes with the ATO in the past. He adds that newly-formed companies with no tax history may have a competitive advantage over established rivals.
