Perth-based conglomerate Wesfarmers has posted a 2017-18 net profit of $A1.19bn, which is 58.3 per cent lower than previously. The full-year result was marred by writedowns, including a $1.4bn hit due to its ill-fated expansion into the UK and Ireland. Wesfarmers’ underlying net profit from continuing operations exceeded market expectations at $2.9bn. MD Rob Scott has indicated that surplus capital following asset sales and the Coles demerger will be returned to shareholders.

The Australian Building & Construction Commission has failed in its bid to have construction union official Alex Tadic personally pay a $7,500 fine for breaching workplace laws. Justice Richard Tracey said that courts can take into account whether a union official has consistently breached workplace laws in the past. He ruled that the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union should pay the fines of Tadic and another official. The union itself was fined $245,000.

Documents released by the banking royal commission show that the Australian Securities & Investments Commission has criticised National Australia Bank over its lack of action in addressing the fee-for-no-service scandal. ASIC wrote to NAB in May to express its dissatisfaction with the bank’s proposed remedial action, stating that it did not constitute an "acceptable resolution" to the regulator’s concerns. ASIC has accused NAB of a range of civil and criminal offences.

Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 has risen to its highest level in more than a decade on the strength of the August reporting season. Investors shrugged off a negative lead from Asian markets and a downturn in base metal and crude oil prices on 15 August, although weaker commodity prices weighed on the resources sector. Meanwhile, Wilson Asset Management chairman Geoff Wilson warns that while the Trump administration’s tax cuts have boosted the US economy, the trade war with China is likely to have an impact in the next 6-12 months.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the national wage price index increased by 2.1 per in the year to June, in line with the inflation rate. Wages in the private sector increased by two per cent, compared with 2.4 per cent growth in public sector wages. Shane Oliver of AMP Capital notes that annual wage growth would have been around 1.9 per cent without the increase in the minimum wage. The latest wage data is likely to ensure that official interest rates remain on hold for some time.

The maiden speech of senator Fraser Anning has been widely denounced by fellow parliamentarians, particularly his call to ban Muslims from migrating to Australia and his use of the phase "final solution" with regard to immigration policy. The Katter’s Australian Party senator has refused to apologise for his comments, stating that he was exercising his right to free speech. Party leader Bob Katter has praised Anning’s speech, describing it as "solid gold", but One Nation leader Pauline Hanson says his remarks were "appalling".

The Federal Government is becoming increasingly divided over the national energy guarantee. Some ministers who are believed to have reservations about the NEG are under pressure from backbench colleagues to quit their portfolios and vote against the policy. They are said to include Keith Pitt, the assistant minister to Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack. Meanwhile, Treasurer Scott Morrison has rejected a push to include a price guarantee in the NEG, stating that it is inconsistent with "Liberal values".

Restart at Koolan has Mt Gibson in sweet spot

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 20 : 16-Aug-18

Mount Gibson Iron has reported a 2017-18 net profit of $99.1m, with insurance proceeds arising from a seawall collapse at the Koolan Island mine contributing $64m to the result. The mine is expected to resume shipments within six months, more than four years after the incident put production on hold. Mount Gibson will benefit from a strong rise in the premium for higher-grade iron ore in the intervening years; ore with 65.5 per cent iron content such as that produced at Koolan Island is now fetching a premium of around 30 per cent to the benchmark price, compared with 3-5 per cent at the time of the collapse.

He has stressed the importance of lower operating costs for businesses in stimulating economic growth.
