A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 56.8 per cent of Australians aged 14+ visited a cafe in an average three-month period in the year to December 2014, compared with 53.7 per cent in 2010. The survey also shows that 38.4 per cent of the population bought fresh coffee in any given four weeks in 2014, up from 36.3 per cent in 2010. Meanwhile, 63.3 per cent of Melburnians pay at least one visit to a cafe for coffee or tea in an average three months, ahead of Hobart residents (62.7 per cent) and Sydneysiders (61 per cent)

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 50 per cent of Australians aged 14+ often receive compliments on their cooking. The survey, which was carried out in the year to December 2014, also shows that these people are 19 per cent more likely than the population average to enjoy eating vegetarian food, while they are 18 per cent more likely to enjoy eating bagels and 16 per cent more likely to enjoy health food. Meanwhile, 21 per cent of Australians say they would rather clean than cook, and they are 10 per cent more likely to enjoy eating both chicken nuggets and hot dogs than the average Australian

The Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry estimates that a public holiday for Easter Sunday in Victoria could costs businesses about $A50m over five years. The State Government’s 2014 election platform included introducing a public holiday on Easter Sunday, which has been a trading day since 2011. Domino’s eyes rivals as pizza sales sizzle

Domino’s Pizza Enterprises has posted a 2014-15 interim net profit of $A29.1m, which is 44.2 per cent higher than previously. Revenue rose by 29.5 per cent to $A343.6m during the half-year. CEO Don Meij forecasts that net profit and EBITDA for the full year will rise by 32.5 per cent and 30 per cent respectively. He says Domino’s will aim to increase its share of Australia’s overall fast-food market from eight per cent at present. It has a 25 per cent share of the pizza sector

New research by Wollongong University shows that during three One Day International and two Twenty20 matches as well as the first three days of the Ashes test series in 2014, junk food branding was shown 3,000-plus times in the TV broadcasts. Penalty rates keep shops shut

Public holiday penalty rates prompted many Perth retailers and restaurants to remain closed on 26 January 2015. Sorrento Restaurant in Northbridge is among those that opted to trade on Australia Day, but proprietor Fiona Dilanzo says this was only due to a 10 per cer surcharge that was imposed on customers. The Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Western Australia favours a single penalty rate for working on public holidays and weekends
