TPG Telecom has reported a hack of its systems that led to the email addresses and phone details of 280,000 iiNet customers being stolen to various bodies, including the Australian Signals Directorate and the Australian Cyber Security Centre. It has also apologised to iiNet customers for the breach, and has told them to be on the lookout for suspicious emails, texts and phone calls. It is understood that the breach of TPG’s systems took place on Sunday, with TPG having acquired the iiNet brand back in 2015.

Aussie Broadband has posted a 2024-25 interim net profit of $12.2m, which is 24 per cent higher than previously. The result was boosted by factors such as the sale of its stake in Superloop following a failed takeover bid. The company recorded 12.5 per cent growth in broadband connections during the half-year, to more than 727,000 in total. Brian Maher, who will become CEO on 1 March, concedes that the take-up rate for the company’s new low-cost Buddy Telco brand has been below expectations, with a total of 6,484 customers at the end of 2024; Buddy has added 2,131 new customers so far in 2025.

Low internet service provider customer satisfaction provides opportunities for innovative offerings

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Jun-20

Customer satisfaction with internet service providers as a whole averages only 75%. That puts it at number 24 out of the 32 industries for which Roy Morgan continuously takes this measure. Within that overall result there are marked differences between individual ISP scores. One of the strategies used by Australia’s major telecommunication companies to capture a larger share of the overall market is to have multiple brands targeting specific demographics. These different brands get very different results. Telstra, easily the largest internet service provider in Australia, offers a perfect example, with its Telstra ISP brand trailing far behind its discount subsidiary brand Belong for customer satisfaction. Australia’s second-largest internet service provider, TPG encompasses several Internet subsidiary brands, including iiNet, Internode and Westnet. All have been good performers, with Internode winning the Annual Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award for 2019 and both TPG and iiNet scoring above average in the most recent monthly results. In contrast, the country’s third-largest ISP, Optus, has the lowest customer satisfaction of the leading brands and was the only major provider to lose customers over the last year.

BHP Billiton has ruled out buying the South32.com domain name, which is owned by a company based in Malibu. It is believed to have demanded $A10m to surrender the name. BHP recently revealed South32 as the name of the spin-off that will hold its non-core assets, and says it was not willing to pay the price being sought by the domain name’s owner. Experts say BHP should have ensured that it owned the .com domain as well as related domain names

NBN compo for 60,000 homes

The Australian – Page: 15 : 21-Dec-17

TPG Telecom has agreed to compensate nearly 8,000 customers whose NBN internet access speeds did not match those advertised by the telco. Australian Competition & Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims says the limitations of fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) technology means that many customers were unlikely to get the speeds that had been advertised. Telstra and Optus had previously agreed to compensate customers using FTTN, and the ACCC expects that other telcos will do so as well.
