ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence edged 0.1% higher to 113.4 in the week ended 29 October 2017, after an 0.8% rise in the previous week. The steady headline result masks some variation between the sub-indices. The outlook on economic conditions in the next year fell 4.5%, more than entirely unwinding the previous 4.3% rise and bringing the sub-index to its lowest value in seven weeks. Consumers were also less optimistic about future economic conditions. This sub-index slipped 1.5%, partially reversing the 3.5% increase in the previous week. In contrast, views about current financial conditions rose a solid 5.3% to 108.4, the highest value since mid-June. The outlook for future financial conditions fell by 1.9%, following a 0.9% fall the previous week. Both sub-indices remain above their long-term averages.

Jupiter Fund Management’s Asian Fund has sold down some of its Australian financial services investments, in part due to concern about South Australia’s proposed bank tax. If the tax is imposed, it has been estimated that it will cost the big four banks and Macquarie $A417 million over four years. The tax is due to be considered by South Australia’s upper house during the week ending 3 November, with the government needing the support of cross-bench MPs to get the tax approved.

Drop in NXT support gives Nick Xenophon reason to ‘flee’ to SA

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 30-Oct-17

The High Court of Australia sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns has judged that South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon was not improperly elected to Federal Parliament at the 2016 Federal Election. However, Xenophon has signalled that he will be returning to State politics anyway, and an in-depth analysis of recent Roy Morgan poll results can reveal why jumping back to State politics may be the smart move for the NXT Leader. Support for the Nick Xenophon Team has dropped alarmingly since the Federal Election, with nationwide support now at just 0.5%, down from a Federal Election return of 1.9% just over a year ago. In Xenophon’s home State the drop has been even more significant with NXT support in October of only 9.5%, down 11.8% from last year’s South Australian State total of 21.3%. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that if NXT is to survive in Federal Parliament without its charismatic leader who has vowed to contest next year’s South Australian Election as the Leader of his new party SA Best, the outgoing Senator Xenophon must choose his replacement Senator wisely.

A study of the Constitution suggests that any ministerial decisions made by the National Party’s Barnaby Joyce and Fiona Nash after 20 October 2016 could be legally challenged after the High Court ruled that they are not eligible to sit in parliament. Labor has made no secret of the fact that it plans to make life difficult for the Federal Government during Joyce’s absence from the House of Representatives. Joyce will have recontest his seat of New England in a by-election on 2 December.

Former Queensland premier Campbell Newman forecasts that One Nation could win up to 10 seats in the 2017 state election. He believes that an alliance with One Nation is the only way that Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls will be able to form government. One Nation’s state leader Steve Dickson is optimistic that the party will hold the balance of power in parliament after the election. Meanwhile, Nicholls says issues such as job creation and the cost of living will be the focus of the Liberal-National Party’s election campaign.

Liberal-National Party leader Tim Nicholls says documents obtained under Right to Information law demonstrate the links between the Queensland Government and unions. He has accused the state branch of the Australian Labor Party of being "owned" by unions in the wake of revelations that Energy Minister Mark Bailey communicated with Electrical Trades Union official Peter Simpson via a personal email account during the union’s wage negotiations with a state-owned energy utility.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash continues to attract scrutiny over allegations that her office leaked details of a police raid on the offices of the Australian Workers’ Union. She has suggested that the Australian Federal Police should investigate the source of the leak, and raised the possibility that it may have been the Registered Organisations Commission. Meanwhile, the Opposition has accused Cash of misleading Parliament after stating that her office was not the source of the leak. Her media adviser subsequently resigned after admitting that he had given the media advance notice of the raids.

Treasury secretary John Fraser has told a Senate estimates hearing that there are indications that wages growth is gaining pace in some sectors of the economy and some geographical areas. Fraser noted that many workers have been reluctant to press for pay rises in the wake of the global financial crisis, which he adds has resulted in the longest business cycle he has experienced.

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 7 : 26-Oct-17

Labor’s Murray Watt will chair a Senate inquiry that will examine the impact of technologies such as automation and robotics on the Australian labour market, society and the broader economy. Ed Husic, the shadow minister for the future of work and the digital economy, has estimated that these technologies will affect the jobs of some 3.5 million Australians. He has warned that the Coalition is not doing enough to prepare the nation for the impact of technology-driven change.
