A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the three months to November 2017, shows that 2.38 million Australians aged 14+ intend to purchase a new vehicle in the next four years. This is an increase of 142,000 over the same period in 2016, and has left intentions only marginally lower than the 15-year high recorded in February 2017. The survey also shows that new vehicle intenders continue to have a much higher level of consumer confidence than the population average. Over the November quarter, the consumer confidence for all Australians was 114.1, whereas those intending to purchase a new vehicle in the next four years had a much higher level with 122.8. In addition to four-year vehicle buying intentions being close to record levels, one-year intentions are up by 13,000 (2.2%) over the same period in 2016 to be currently on 615,000. Those intending to purchase in the next 12 months also had higher-than-average consumer confidence.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 2.491 million Australians aged 14+ intend to purchase a new car in the next four years. This is an increase of 184,000 intenders over the last four months. The big improvement has left new vehicle intentions only marginally lower than the 15-year high recorded in February 2017. In addition to four-year vehicle buying intentions being close to record levels, one-year intentions are up by 14,000 (1.5%) over the same period in 2016 to be currently on 626,000. Over the September quarter, the consumer confidence level for all Australians was 113.3, whereas those intending to purchase a new vehicle in the next four years had a confidence level of 121.8. Those intending to purchase in the next twelve months also had higher than average confidence (120.9).

Open market the death of car makers

Original article by Simon Evans
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 7 : 18-Oct-17

Holden’s share of Australia’s new car market has fallen from about 20 per cent in the 1990s to just seven per cent. Holden will be the last car maker to cease local manufacturing when its Adelaide plant closes on 20 October. Former Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO Tom Phillips says local car-makers struggled due to the influx of international car brands, with some 65 models competing in a relatively small market in terms of population. He adds that a change in consumers’ vehicle preferences also contributed to the demise of the local industry.

Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine has presented the latest State of the Nation Report in Melbourne with a special Spotlight on the Australian Automotive Industry. The State of the Nation Report looks at the changes underway in the Australian automotive industry and the even bigger changes that are set to impact on every part of the industry throughout the 2020s. 2025 has been identified as a tipping point for the industry as a whole as it faces digital disruption – any automotive players that fail to plan fully for the future involving increased car-sharing, driverless cars, and purely online sales will find it far too hard to catch up to "first-movers" by the time 2025 rolls around.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 13 per cent of Australians aged 14+ (2.65 million people) reported "almost always" or "occasionally" watching Formula 1 car racing on TV in the 12 months to December 2016. However, this rises to 24 per cent among Australians who intend to buy a new car this year. The survey also shows that 48 per cent of F1 viewers regard themselves as "a bit of a car enthusiast", and 37 per cent "would like a car that handles like a racing car". The levels of agreement with these automotive attitudes are more than twice as high among F1 viewers than the average Australian. Meanwhile, F1 viewers are around twice as likely as the average new car buyer to have Audi (106 per cent more likely) or Holden Special Vehicle (+97 per cent) on their shortlist of makes. They are also much more inclined to be considering a Jeep (68 per cent more likely than average), Mercedes-Benz (+49 per cent) or BMW (+47 per cent).
