Preliminary new car sales data shows that Toyota retained its title as the biggest-selling car brand in Australia in 2015. The Corolla was the largest-selling car for the third year in a row, although heavy discounting saw the Camry become the nation’s top-selling car for December. Meanwhile, Ford has recorded its worst annual performance since 1966, with an 11.6 per cent decline in sales, while GM Holden’s sales fell by 2.9 per cent to a 22-year low.

High income households plan to spend almost $50,000 on the next new car – a third above the norm

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that more than 2.2 million Australians aged 14+ intend to buy a new car in the next four years. The average household income of new car intenders is $A133,000 per year, and the average anticipated cost of their next car is $A36,840 – equivalent to almost 28 per cent of annual earnings. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2015, also shows that new car intenders in households earning $A200,000 or more per year expect their next car to cost an average of $A48,830. Meanwhile, 12 per cent of all new car intenders expect to spend less than $A20,000 on their next car and 15 per cent expect to spend $A50,000 or more.

Marks for marques: new car intention at AFL clubs

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that almost 7.7 million Australians aged 14+ support an AFL team, and supporters are around 10 per cent more likely than the average to intend to buy a new car in the next four years. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2015, also shows that 12.6 per cent of all AFL team supporters intend to buy a new car some time before 2019, compared with 11.5 per cent of all Australians. Meanwhile, 16.1 per cent of North Melbourne Kangaroos supporters intend to buy a new car in the next four years, which is 40 per cent above the norm.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that some 2,378,000 Australians aged 14+ are planning to buy a new car in the next four years, which is 129,000 more than in February 2015, and up on the same time in 2014. The survey also shows that 598,000 motorists intend to buy a new car in the next 12 months, compared with 537,000 in February and slightly more than the same time in 2014

Internet gives intending car buyers their auto fill

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 30 per cent of Australians aged 14+ researched cars online in an average-six month period in the year to December 2014, whether they intended to buy a car or not. This compares with just 17 per cent in 2002. Meanwhile, 59 per cent of Australians looking to buy a brand new car in the next 12 months have researched at least one aspect of cars or dealers online in the last six months, as have 47 per cent of those planning to buy a used car

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that the number of Australians aged 14+ who intend to buy a new car in the next four years rose to 2,249,000 in January 2015. Likewise, the number of people who plan to buy a new car in the next 12 months has risen by 56,000 to 537,000. Despite recent growth, the current pool of people in the market for a new car remains marginally below the equivalent period in 2014, but it has moved back above the long-term average

Fuel efficiency still top priority for Aussie motorists

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 79 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who are motorists consider fuel efficiency to be more important in a vehicle than high performance. The survey, which was carried out in the year to November 2014, also shows that 75 per cent will only buy a car with a proven track record, and 72 per cent spend a lot of time researching their options before deciding which car to buy. Meanwhile, 69 per cent of drivers agree that "I usually only consider the main car manufacturers as I don’t like to take the risk of a lesser known make"

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2014, has found that almost 46 per cent of the 2,258,000 Australians aged 14+ who are planning to buy a new car in the next four years would
"seriously consider buying a hybrid vehicle". This compares with 43.6% during the same period in 2013. Some 64.2 per cent of Australians who intend to buy a Volvo would seriously consider a hybrid vehicle
