The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has leaked millions of files from 14 large offshore companies that administer nominee firms for affluent clients in low-tax jurisdictions. Some of their clients include Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, former British prime minister Tony Blair and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. Over 400 Australians have been named in the huge leak of files, which have been dubbed the Pandora Papers ; assets revealed in the leaked files are worth over $1 trillion

Lawyers probe Rio’s Mongolian maelstrom

US law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro has advised that it will investigate the market disclosures of Rio Tinto and Turquoise Hill Resources with regard to the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. The market capitalisation of Turquoise Hill recently fell sharply after Rio Tinto warned of a blowout in the cost of an underground expansion of the mine. Law firm Baker & McKenzie has previously flagged plans to scrutinise Rio Tinto’s disclosures regarding the project.

Offshore leak exposes Trump’s Russia links

Some 13.4 million records from Bermudan law firm Appleby have been leaked to the international press. The records cover the period from 1950 to 2016. The leaked records contain significant revelations, including that US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has interests in a shipping company that has received close to $US70 million in revenue since 2014 from a company co-owned by the son-in-law of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The records also reveal detailed information about the Queen’s finances, and show that mining firm Glencore is Appleby’s largest client.

Ogilvy’s secret to spotting fake news

Sam Tatam, a behavioural strategy director with Ogilvy Change is to give a keynote speech at the upcoming Public Relations Institute of Australia conference. His address, "Powerful Ideas and Influence", will look at how the public relations industry can best get its messages across in the current climate of fake news. Tatam says people tend to trust information if they feel that large numbers of other people also trust it, while being honest about something that has previously being hidden also helps to engender trust.

Locals fall short when it comes to annual reports

Research by KPMG shows that the annual reports of French companies average 310 pages, while Australian annual reports average just 155. Meanwhile, local companies’ consolidated financial statements average 70 pages, compared with 140 in Italy. However, the length of the remuneration reports of Australian companies tend to exceed the global average, comprising 28 per cent of their annual report. KPMG’s global survey also shows that just 14 per cent of Australian companies outline their longer-term business strategy in the annual report.
