James Fitzgerald from the Australian Centre for Corporate Responsibility says the behaviour of Rio Tinto "beggars belief". He was commenting on the revelation that the mining company hired lawyers to prepare for a possible injunction against the destruction of ancient rock shelters in Juukan Gorge in Western Australia, just three days before they were destroyed in May. Fitzgerald says the attitude of Rio since the shelters were destroyed appears to be that their destruction was just a tragic mistake, but the revelations regarding its hiring of lawyers suggests otherwise.

A Brisbane court is hearing an application to lift an injunction that prevents veteran radio broadcaster Alan Jones from repeating imputations that prompted a record defamation payout in 2018. The Wagner family was awarded $3.75m in damages after the Supreme Court ruled that Jones had defamed them in a series of broadcasts on 2GB and 4BC. The Wagners’ lawyer has argued that the injunction simply prevents Jones from repeating the allegations and does not prevent him from discussing the case.

Australian mobile advertising technology group Unlockd was heavily reliant on Google’s app store and AdMob advertising platform. Right Click Capital partner Ben Chong says Unlockd’s descent into voluntary administration demonstrates the risks of a business model which is similar to that of Google itself. Unlockd had proposed an IPO that was tipped to raise around $A80m, and the start-up had previously attracted funding of more than $A60m from private investors.

Australian telcos have been ordered to block access to 16 internet addresses that allow consumers to access pirated versions of subscription TV channels. The Federal Court issued an injunction in late April requiring the telcos to block access to the servers, which are primarily based in the Netherlands. The injunction had been sought by Village Roadshow and six Hollywood studios, and followed a prior decision of the Federal Court to block access to a range of websites that feature pirated video content.
