National support up in August as National-led Government increases lead to 10% points and RBNZ cut interest rates

Roy Morgan’s New Zealand Poll for August 2024 shows that support for the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) has increased by 3% points to 53%, increasing its lead over the Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition on 43% (down 1% points). Support for the National Party rose 3.5% points to 36% (the highest level of support since February), but support for ACT dropped 1.5% points to 9.5%; support for NZ First increased 1% point to 7.5%. Meanwhile, support for Labour increased by 2.5% points to 26.5%, support for the Greens was down 1% point to 13% and support for the Maori Party dropped 2.5% points to 3.5%. A further 4% (down 2% points) of electors supported a minor party outside Parliament. The survey results for August would lead to 66 seats (down two seats from the election) being won by the current National/ ACT/ NZ First governing coalition compared to 54 seats (down one seat) for the Opposition. This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a New Zealand-wide cross-section of 898 electors from July 29 to August 25. Meanwhile, the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating increased 7.5pts to 97.5 in August.

Roy Morgan’s New Zealand Poll for June 2024 shows that support for the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) has increased by 1% point to 49.5%; it retains a small lead over the Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition on 45.5% (down 2.5% points). Support for National increased 1.5% points to 35%, support for ACT decreased 0.5% points to 9.5% while support for NZ First was again unchanged at 5.5%. Meanwhile, support for Labour was down 2.5% points to 27.5%, support for the Greens was up 0.5% points to 14.5% and support for the Maori Party was up 0.5% points to 3.5%. A further 5% (up 0.5% points) of electors supported a minor party outside Parliament. The survey results for June would lead to 62 seats (down six seats from the election) being won by the current governing coalition, compared to 58 seats (up three seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a New Zealand-wide cross-section of 930 electors from May 27 to June 23. Roy Morgan’s New Zealand Poll for May 2024 shows that support for the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) has fallen by 4.5% points to 48.5%; it now has a narrow lead over the Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition (up 4% points to 47%. support for National was down 3% points to 33.5% – the lowest support for National since last year’s election; support for ACT decreased 1.5% points to 9.5% while support for NZ First was unchanged at 5.5%. Support for Labour jumped 5.5% points to 30%, to its highest level since June 2023; support for the Greens was up 1% point to 14% and support for the Maori Party was down 2.5% points to 3%. A further 4.5% (up 0.5% points) of electors supported a minor party outside Parliament. The survey results for May would lead to 61 seats (down seven seats from the election) being won by the current National/ ACT/ NZ First governing coalition compared to 59 seats (up four seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. The Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll for December 2023 shows new Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) with a majority of 51.5% (down 6.5% from November) in their first month since being sworn in on November 27, 2023). Support for National was down 1.5% to 36%, while support for ACT dropped 3% points to 9.5% and support for NZ First was down 2% points to 6%. In December support for the defeated Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition was at 42.5%, up 6.5% points from November. Support for Labour increased 1% point to 22%, while support for the Greens surged 3% points to 15.5% (the highest support for the Greens since October 2022) and support for the Maori Party was up 2.5% points to 5%. The survey results for December would lead to 66 seats (down eight seats) being won by the current National/ ACT/ NZ First governing coalition, compared to only 56 seats (up eight seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. The Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll for November 2023 shows new Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the National-led Government (National, ACT & NZ First) with a majority of 58% support for November, up 5.2% points from the mid-October election. Support for National was virtually unchanged at 37.5%, down 0.6% points from the election, while support for ACT increased 3.9% points to 12.5% and support for NZ First was up 1.9% points to 8%. In November support for the defeated Labour-Greens-Maori Party Parliamentary Opposition was at only 36%, down 5.6% points from the election. Support for Labour dropped 5.9% points to 21% (the lowest ever recorded in a Roy Morgan Poll). However, support for the Greens increased 0.9% points to 12.5% while support for the Maori Party was down 0.6% points to 2.5%. The survey results for November would lead to 74 seats (up six seats) being won by the governing coalition, compared to only 48 seats (down seven seats) for the Labour/ Greens/ Maori Party Opposition. Support for Labour was down 4.5% points to 26% (the lowest level of support for Labour so far this year), while support for the Greens fell 0.5% points to 9% (the lowest support for the party since August 2022). Support for the National Party rose 3.5% points to 33.5%, while support for Act NZ was down 1% point to 14%. Support for a right-leaning potential National/Act NZ coalition was up 2.5% points at 47.5% in July. Support for Labour was down 0.5% points to 30.5%, while support for the Greens fell 2.5% points to 9.5% (the lowest support for the party since August 2022).
