Market Research Update – Page: Online : 7-Feb-23

The latest Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll shows that support for the Labour/Greens coalition government rose to 42% in January 2023 (up 3.5% points on December 2022). Support for Labour was up 2.5% points to 30%, even before former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced her intention to resign on 19 January. Support for the Greens was up 1% point to 12%. In contrast, the main Opposition National Party lost support in January, down 3% points to 32% and support for Act NZ was down by 1% point to 13.5%. Combined support for a potential National/Act NZ coalition is down 4% points to 45.5%, the lowest combined support since October 2022. The results for January suggest that neither Labour/Greens nor National/Act NZ will have enough support to form a majority Government later this year due to increasing support for both the Maori Party and New Zealand First, which are set to hold the ‘balance of power’ on current results. This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a New Zealand-wide cross-section of 948 electors during January. Meanwhile, the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating jumped by 16pts to 91 in January, to its highest level since October 2022 (92). This is the biggest monthly increase since a leap of 28 points in April 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll shows that support for the Labour/Greens coalition government was on 38.5% in December, down 19.4% points since the 2020 election. Support for Labour has fallen by 22.5% to 27.5% since the election in October 2020. In addition, 8% of electors support minor parties outside Parliament, an increase of 0.3% points since the 2020 election. If these results were repeated at this year’s election the National/Act NZ coalition would likely secure 65 seats in the new Parliament compared to 50 seats for Labour/Greens and a further five seats for the Maori Party. This New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a New Zealand-wide cross-section of 947 electors during December, prior to the resignation of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Meanwhile, the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating fell by a further 5pts in December to a record low of 75. The indicator is now down 78pts from January 2021 (153), just after the re-election of the Ardern Government.

New Zealand proposes taxing cow burps to reduce emissions

Original article by George Wright
BBC News – Page: Online : 12-Oct-22

New Zealand’s agricultural sector accounts for about 50 per cent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. The NZ government has proposed the introduction of a tax on the methane emissions of cows as part of its strategy to counter climate change. However, Federated Farmers national president Andrew Hoggard has warned that the levy may prompt many farmers to sell up. Some critics also contend that the proposal could increase carbon emissions, as food production might shift to countries that have less efficient farming methods.

NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern set to sweep to a crushing election victory on Saturday

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Oct-20

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is set to be returned for a second term on Saturday with Labour Party support at 47.5% in September, an increase of 10.6% points since the 2017 New Zealand Election. Support for the main opposition National Party is unchanged at 28.5% in September, but down a massive 16% points from the last Election. If these results are repeated on Saturday, the governing Labour Party will be on the cusp of winning a majority of seats in its own right with a projected 61/120 seats set to be won by Labour and National on track for 38 seats in the new Parliament. Interviewing for this survey in September encompassed the period during which Auckland was subject to Stage 2.5 restrictions and the rest of New Zealand was in Stage 2 up to and including the first leaders debate between Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Opposition Leader Judith Collins. This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a NZ-wide cross-section of 911 electors during September.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern maintains crushing lead over new National leader Judith Collins

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 10-Aug-20

In July support for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party was at 53.5% (down 1% since June), but still more than double the support for the National Party on 26.5% (down 0.5%), with just over a month to go before the New Zealand election in mid-September. If an election were held today Labour could govern without the help of either New Zealand First or the Greens. Interviewing for this survey in July encompassed the period before and after Judith Collins became the new leader of National in mid-July after Todd Muller’s shock resignation after less than two months in the role. The early indications are that the new leader has had a negligible impact on support for National although a full month of interviewing in August will provide a clearer picture in the run-up to the election. The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a NZ-wide cross-section of 899 electors during July.
