SMI: Ten’s revenue share rises as rivals tumble with newspapers down nearly 30 per cent

The July 2015 Standard Media Index (SMI) shows that Network Ten increased its share of ad revenue from media agencies by 3.2 per cent to 24.4 per cent, year-on-year. Newspapers recorded sharp falls, with media agency spend declining 29.4 per cent to $A47.2 million, $A19.6 million less than in July 2014. Digital bookings rose 6.7 per cent to $A123.5 million although late digital bookings are expected to cause the paid media market for July to be flat. In television, ad spending rose 3.2 per cent to $A301.3 million, while radio was up 0.4 per cent to $A47.2 million. Cinema recorded a rise of 43.6 per cent, to $A5.8 million. Outdoor declined 10.1 per cent to $A53.3 million while magazines recorded a fall in spend of 16.9 per cent to $A15.1 million. Among categories, food/alcoholic retail spending rose 33.5 per cent to $A32.2 million. The restaurants category improved year on year with bookings rising 16.6 per cent in July to $A28.6 million.

Abbott treads softly over media reform

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is seeking consensus in the industry before moving forward on media reform. Acknowledging technology is running ahead of regulation, he says it is too early to move on the audience reach rule as well as the two-out-of-three rule that restricts ownership of TV, radio and print. Without consensus, the government would simply be taking sides in a commercial dispute.

Aussies in mid-size towns want more local news

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 51 per cent of Australians aged 14+ regard local news as the content they most want to see, hear or read one or more times across the week. The survey, which was carried out in the year to March 2015, also shows that 49 per cent of capital city residents cite local news as a weekday or weekend content preference, while residents of Australia’s 12 largest non-capital towns and urban areas generally prefer local news. This includes 71 per cent of residents of Launceston and 69 per cent of those in Albury.

Internet overtakes newspapers at breakfast, but radio still the most-used media in the morning

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 72 per cent of Australians aged 14+ reported using one or more forms of media at breakfast time on weekdays during the year to March 2015. This has remained steady over the past five years. However, 16 per cent of Australians are going online first thing in the morning, compared with 8.5 per cent in the year to March 2010. Meanwhile, the proportion who read newspapers at breakfast has fallen by four per cent to 15.9 per cent since 2010, while the proportion who listen to the radio at breakfast has fallen by four per cent to 28.1 per cent.
