Immigration Minister David Coleman will grant controversial right-wing speaker Milo Yiannopoulos a visa to undertake an Australian tour. This follows a backlash against a Home Affairs letter that outlined a number of reasons why Yiannopoulos would fail the character test that the federal government has previously used to ban a number of people from entering Australia. Sky News host Andrew Bolt has described the attempt to ban Yiannopoulos from entering Australia as "pathetic", while Labor immigration spokesman Shayne Neumann says Yiannopoulos "has no place in Australia".

There are claims that online activist group Sleeping Giants is using fake Twitter accounts to promote an advertising boycott against Sky News. Sleeping Giants asserts Sky is providing opinionated broadcasting on urban train networks, but Sky is only contracted to supply brief news, weather and sports updates. Sleeping Giant began its campaign against Sky after the broadcasting of an interview with far-right activist Blair Cottrell. Cottrell has a presence on Facebook and Twitter, but Sleeping Giants has not sought to target them.

Michael Naraine of Deakin University’s Business School says political activists may "hijack" the hashtags of major corporate sponsors of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. He notes that there was a similar trend for social media users to use the hashtags of companies to make political statements during the 2014 Winter Oympics. Naraine adds that political tensions over North Korea may see activists ramp up their use of sponsors’ hashtags to make political statements during the upcoming Winter Olympics.
