Clean up unions, shake up ties to Labor: Crean

Former ACTU president Simon Crean says the union movement must address the issue of corruption and criminal behaviour in its ranks, warning that government action will be taken if union fail to do so themselves. He has also urged the Australian Labor Party to review its structural relationship with unions, with reforms such as reducing the number of union delegates who attend Labor conferences. The former Labor leader is not convinced that deregistering the militant Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union is appropriate, as it would affect members who have not been involved in corruption.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 15-Dec-15

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 1.5 per cent to 57.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 5-6 and 12-13 December 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 1.5 per cent to 48 per cent, but the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen by seven points to 115. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the scale of the Budget blowout in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook shows that the Turnbull Government faces a challenging 12 months as it attempts to win a mandate in its own right at the 2016 Federal Election whilst also steering the Australian economy through a slowing economy caused by the end of the long-running commodities boom.

Australia’s former industry minister Ian Macfarlane has resigned from the Liberal Party and joined its Coalition partner, the National Party. Scott Buchholz is also considering a switch to the National Party, which will now press the Liberal Party for an additional minister and an increased role in the federal government. Macfarlane says he is keen to take on a ministerial portfolio again but stresses that any appointments must be based on merit. He lost the industry portfolio in a ministerial reshuffle under new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 1-Dec-15

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that a person’s Federal voting preference seems to influence the places they would like to take a holiday. The survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2015, shows that Australian electors planning to vote L-NP are 25 per cent more likely than the average voter to name both the Murray Mallee-Mildura-Swan Hill and Toowoomba/Darling Downs regions as a potential domestic holiday destination. ALP voters are 24 per cent more likely to nominate areas of the ACT outside of Canberra, while electors intending to vote for the Greens are 128 per cent more likely to prefer Freycinet National Park and 123 per cent more likely to prefer the Mt Buffalo-Mt Baw Baw-Lake Mountain region. Overseas destinations which appeal to L-NP voters noticeably more than the average Aussie elector include the United Arab Emirates (28 per cent more likely) and the Philippines (21 per cent), whereas ALP voters are 15 per cent more likely to nominate India as somewhere they would like to visit.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 30-Nov-15

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis is unchanged at 56 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 21-22 and 28-29 November 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 0.5 per cent to 46.5 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 2.5 points to 122 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that despite the issues of global warming and terrorism dominating the news headlines lately, Malcolm Turnbull’s most important task as Prime Minister is to ensure a growing Australian economy which provides gainful employment to as many Australians as possible. Ultimately it is job creation and sustainable economic growth in Australia which will decide the success or otherwise of Turnbull’s Prime Ministership.

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has fallen by 0.5 per cent to 56 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 7-8 and 14-15 November 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has fallen by one per cent to 46 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 7.5 points to 119.5 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the strong lift in confidence around Australia gives the Turnbull Government the mandate to make the tough decisions about whether or not Australia should commit troops to any international coalition aimed at defeating the Islamic State (ISIS) and affiliated terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria over the next few months, as Western nations in particular seek to make the most effective and productive response to the horrific Paris terrorist attacks.

Union influence out of control: Ferguson

Original article by Ewin Hannan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 6 : 27-Oct-15

Former ACTU president Martin Ferguson believes that trade unions have too much influence over the Australian Labor Party. The former federal MP has criticised Labor’s resistance to changes to the industrial relations system. Australian Workers’ Union national secretary Scott McDine has dismissed Ferguson’s criticism as hypocritical. As chairman of Tourism Accommodation Australia, Ferguson represents the interests of employers in the tourism sector.
