Liberal Party of Victoria president Michael Kroger has criticised several federal Liberal MPs for holding "secret" meetings with representatives of GetUp. Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne and backbenchers Tim Wilson and Trent Zimmerman are among the members of the Liberal Party’s moderate faction to have held meetings with the left-wing activist group. However, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull argues that GetUp meets with politicians from all political parties.

Malcolm Turnbull moves on citizenship, orders full disclosure

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 7-Nov-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called for all federal politicians to declare to the parliament that they are not dual citizens as a way of resolving the current citizenship saga. However, he continued to resist calls for a citizenship audit of federal MPs, as has been sought by the minor parties. Turnbull’s proposal would apply to both sitting and new MPs, with new MPs being required to make declarations within 21 days of being sworn in. Supporting documentation would be required by MPs when making their declaration.

Citizenship debacle a trust breaker: Goyder

Original article by Jacob Greber
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 3-Nov-17

Wesfarmers CEO Richard Goyder says political uncertainty is weighing on consumer confidence and retail sales. He used a National Press Club speech on 2 November to criticise former Senate president Stephen Parry over a long delay in disclosing concerns that he may have British citizenship by descent. Goyder added that Parry’s inaction has contributed to the general public’s lack of trust in politicians and heightened the perception that they are not addressing the needs of electors.

Federal Parliament’s dual citizenship crisis has deepened after Senate president Stephen Parry revealed that he may hold British citizenship by descent. He is the first Liberal whose eligibility for parliament has come under scrutiny, after the party had previously criticised its Coalition partner for the citizenship crisis. Senator Parry has indicated that he will resign from parliament if he is deemed to be a British citizen, rather than allow the matter to be referred to the High Court. Other parliamentarians may attract greater scrutiny in the wake of Parry’s revelation.

Labor to target Nats’ decisions

A study of the Constitution suggests that any ministerial decisions made by the National Party’s Barnaby Joyce and Fiona Nash after 20 October 2016 could be legally challenged after the High Court ruled that they are not eligible to sit in parliament. Labor has made no secret of the fact that it plans to make life difficult for the Federal Government during Joyce’s absence from the House of Representatives. Joyce will have recontest his seat of New England in a by-election on 2 December.

Drop in NXT support gives Nick Xenophon reason to ‘flee’ to SA

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 30-Oct-17

The High Court of Australia sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns has judged that South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon was not improperly elected to Federal Parliament at the 2016 Federal Election. However, Xenophon has signalled that he will be returning to State politics anyway, and an in-depth analysis of recent Roy Morgan poll results can reveal why jumping back to State politics may be the smart move for the NXT Leader. Support for the Nick Xenophon Team has dropped alarmingly since the Federal Election, with nationwide support now at just 0.5%, down from a Federal Election return of 1.9% just over a year ago. In Xenophon’s home State the drop has been even more significant with NXT support in October of only 9.5%, down 11.8% from last year’s South Australian State total of 21.3%. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that if NXT is to survive in Federal Parliament without its charismatic leader who has vowed to contest next year’s South Australian Election as the Leader of his new party SA Best, the outgoing Senator Xenophon must choose his replacement Senator wisely.

Employment Minister Michaelia Cash continues to attract scrutiny over allegations that her office leaked details of a police raid on the offices of the Australian Workers’ Union. She has suggested that the Australian Federal Police should investigate the source of the leak, and raised the possibility that it may have been the Registered Organisations Commission. Meanwhile, the Opposition has accused Cash of misleading Parliament after stating that her office was not the source of the leak. Her media adviser subsequently resigned after admitting that he had given the media advance notice of the raids.

‘Citizenship seven’ have Friday on their minds

Original article by Rosie Lewis

The High Court’s ruling on the eligibility of seven MPs and senators to be in federal parliament will be handed down on 27 October. A by-election in Barnaby Joyce’s seat of New England is slated for 2 December if the court rules that his dual citizenship at the time of the 2016 election disqualifies him from being in parliament. George Williams, the dean of law at the University of New South Wales, expects the court to disqualify at least some of the parliamentarians.

Shorten faces ‘donation’ probe

Original article by Brad Norington
The Australian – Page: 1 & 2 : 23-Oct-17

The Registered Organisations Commission is believed to be investigating a $A25,000 donation by the Australian Workers’ Union to the 2007 election campaign of current Opposition Leader Bill Shorten. He had been the head of the AWU at the time. The union also made large donations to the election campaigns of two other Labor candidates. The ROC recently began a separate probe into the AWU’s donation to activist group GetUp in 2006, whose board members at the time included Shorten. Labor MP Brendan O’Connor alleges that the ROC investigations are part of a smear campaign against Shorten.
