A special Roy Morgan telephone survey has found that 83 per cent of Australians aged 14+ believe that it should be legal for workers in private industry to go on strike. The survey, which was carried out from 13-15 October 2015, also shows that 80 per cent of Australians support the legal right of workers in public utilities such as trains, trams, and buses to strike. Meanwhile, 81 per cent support the right of professionals such as teachers and nurses working for the Government to strike, and 74 per cent support the rights of emergency services workers such as police, ambulance drivers and firefighters to strike. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that analysis by demographics reveals that clear majorities of supporters of all major political parties, respondents of all age groups, residents from every State, and both men and women all believe that workers have a legal right to strike.

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by 12 per cent to 55 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekend of 19-20 September 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has risen by 11 per cent to 46 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 17 points to 103 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the positive response for Turnbull gives our new Prime Minister and his team a strong mandate to tackle the "cash economy" and the wage rorts that go hand-in-hand. The recent examples of 7-Eleven and United Petroleum show major industrial relations reforms are required to limit the "cash economy" – in particular tourism, retail and hospitality employees and tradesmen.

Public opinion polls have consistently shown that Australians prefer Malcolm Turnbull rather than Tony Abbott as Prime Minister. An online poll by "The Daily Telegraph" on 14 September 2015 showed that 67 per cent of respondents preferred Turnbull. A Morgan Poll in July found that his rating as preferred prime minister had risen by six per cent in three months, to 44 per cent. Roy Morgan Research’s Gary Morgan noted at the time that Turnbull was also preferred by Coalition voters, who had tended to favour Abbott in the past.

Liberals lead in Canning as threat to PM grows

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 14-Sep-15

There is growing speculation that Prime Minister Tony Abbott will face a leadership spill either before or just after the 19 September 2015 by-election in the seat of Canning. A Fairfax Media/Ipsos poll has found that Liberal Party would have narrowly won the by-election if it had been held on 12 September, albeit with a swing against it of about 10 per cent. Some Liberal insiders have suggested that a leadership challenge is likely if the swing against the party is greater than five per cent.

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has fallen by 0.5 per cent to 45 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 29-30 August and 5-6 September 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has fallen by two per cent to 36.5 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen by 5.5 points to 90 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the nation’s high level of unemployment and under-employment is the biggest challenge facing the Federal Government as it deals with the end of the mining boom and the imminent closure of the Australian car manufacturing industry over the next two years.
