Optus’s sports streaming service currently boasts more than 700,000 subscribers, and the telco is optimistic that the new English Premier League season will attract more customers. Optus CEO Allen Lew notes that no EPL matches will broadcast on free-to-air networks during the new season; he adds that in addition to live streaming of all matches, Optus Sport will seek to deliver additional value to customers via its coverage of the EPL. Optus initially secured exclusive EPL rights in 2015, and its deal was renewed in 2018.

Australian telco Optus launched its streaming coverage of the English Premier League season on the weekend of 13-14 August 2016. A spokesperson has indicated that just three per cent of its customers had reported problems with the coverage. However, many people used social media to criticise the telco’s EPL coverage. The complaints included claims that there was a one-minute delay in the coverage, despite it supposedly being live, and the poor picture quality of the streaming video.

The majority of Optus customers will pay $A15 per month to access the telco’s coverage of English Premier League matches. Optus had been widely tipped to charge just $A10 per month. However, customers on Optus’s most expensive mobile and broadband plans will not be charged extra for access to EPL matches. Optus also intends to launch a mini set-top box that will allow customers to stream EPL matches to a TV rather than viewing them on a PC or mobile device.

EPL rights loss to Optus a blow to Foxtel, Macquarie says

Original article by Vesna Poljak

Andrew Levy of Macquarie Group says Singtel Optus’s deal to acquire the English Premier League rights is a "clear negative" for incumbent broadcaster Foxtel. Levy notes that English soccer is popular with Foxtel subscribers, and the pay-TV group has benefited from the Premier League’s exclusion from the anti-siphoning list. Fox Sports also recently lost the right to broadcast the popular Saturday and Monday night National Rugby League matches.
