A survey of 2,000 Australians by Deloitte has found that 90 per cent of respondents are not willing to pay for news due to the wealth of content that is available online for free. However, the sixth annual Media Consumer Survey also found that the issue of "fake news" is a concern for 65 per cent of respondents. Meanwhile, the survey shows that the proportion of respondents who cite social media as a primary news source has fallen from 18 per cent to 14 per cent, while 53 per cent of respondents rated television advertising as having either a high or medium influence on their purchasing decisions.

The Fair Work Commission has directed LED Technologies to pay compensation to a former salesman after it found that he was unfairly dismissed over a Facebook post. LED claimed that the post – which contained offensive language – was in breach of its social media policy which bans using social media at work. In his defence, the salesman had claimed that he was on a break at the time, that he was unaware of the policy, and that the post made no reference to LED.

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh says the pay-TV group is collaborating with Facebook on the development of software that can detect unauthorised live streams on the social media platform. The tool is being created in the wake of the boxing match between Anthony Mundine and Danny Green. Foxtel had broadcast the match on a pay-per-view basis, but it was illegally streamed via several Facebook accounts. Foxtel has agreed to accept a public apology from those responsible rather than pursue legal action.

Media groups are increasingly seeking to generate traffic to their websites by allowing their content to be republished by companies such as Google and Facebook. However, Facebook recently made changes that give priority to content that is posted by individuals rather than media companies. Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner notes that Facebook and Google are solely content aggregators and do not create their own content, and argues that they should reinvest some of their Australian profits into producing content.
