Opposition leader Bill Shorten has denied suggestions that his office doctored the transcript of a TV interview given by Labor MP Linda Burney. Her staffer, David Tan, transcribed the interview that appeared on Sky News. Tan contends that he made an "innocent mistake", while Burney says Tan has been counselled over what has been described as a "grossly inaccurate transcription". Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the transcript amounted to a "deliberate act of fabrication", while Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the interview was "falsified".

The ABC will revamp its flagship evening news bulletin, with a focus on major stories, exclusive content and interviews. A strategy document also shows that the public broadcaster wants to ensure that "ABC News" is better integrated with "7:30" so the latter does not cover the same stories. The ABC is seeking to arrest a decline in the ratings of its 7pm news, which boasted an audience of just 660,000 across the five main capital cities in mid-May. Its audience is also heavily skewed toward the 50+ age demographic.

There is speculation that Sky News could eventually adopt a pay-wall model for its online content. Meanwhile, Sky News will launch a dedicated Sky News UK channel in late May, which will replace the existing "red button" news service, while the A-PAC public affairs channel will be relaunched as Sky News Extra.

The proposed merger between Foxtel and Fox Sports is in doubt due to a dispute between Foxtel’s joint owners over carriage fees for Sky News. Foxtel currently pays about $A30m a year to broadcast the news channel, but Sky News owner News Corp is seeking an increase in this fee. Foxtel’s 50 per cent owner Telstra has signalled that it is open to an increase in the carriage fee, but its proposed increase is lower than that sought by News Corp. The merger between Foxtel and Fox Sports recently gained regulatory approval.

Ten Network CEO Paul Anderson says the Australian Government’s cross-media ownership reforms should include measures to ensure that regional broadcasters continue to provide local news content. He also cautions that regional broadcasters should not be subject to "onerous and non-commercial obligations" which will not apply to online rivals. The National Party of Australia wants to ensure that regional broadcasters are required to maintain a local presence if media laws are relaxed.

The issue of local news coverage by regional TV broadcasters is under scrutiny as the Australian Governments prepares to pursue changes to cross-media ownership laws.
