Sources have indicated that a decision on Rugby Australia’s next broadcasting rights deal could be made within days. Rugby Australia has held meetings with executives from Foxtel and Nine Entertainment, and the discussions are said to be "well advanced". Foxtel currently holds the broadcasting rights, while Nine could potentially broadcast one Super Rugby match each week as well as the Wallabies’ matches. Any deal with Nine could also include more extensive rugby coverage via its Stan streaming video service.

The coronavirus pandemic has prompted key sports codes such as the AFL and NRL to renegotiate their current broadcasting rights deals. However, horse racing coverage has attracted a growing audience during the pandemic, which is likely to result in a significant increase in the cost of the sport’s next broadcasting rights deals. Meanwhile, the fourth running of ‘The Everest’ is expected to attract record TV ratings on 17 October.

Ten confirms exit from Supercars, leaving Seven in pole position

The Ten Network’s director of sport production Adam Cush has advised that it will relinquish the Supercars’ free-to-air broadcasting rights at the end of 2020. Ten and pay-TV group Foxtel secured a six-year rights deal in 2013 which commenced in 2015. Ten indicated earlier in 2020 that it may not seek to renew the rights deal. Seven West Media previously held the free-to-air broadcasting rights, but its push to reduce costs means it may be unwilling to pay too much for the Supercars rights.

Contract discounts cost AFL $150m

Original article by John Stensholt
The Australian – Page: 3 : 12-Jun-20

Foxtel and Seven West Media struck revised broadcast deals with the Australian Football League just prior to the 2020 AFL season resuming on 11 June. The revised deals followed the AFL season being suspended for three months because of COVID-19, and will result in the two companies saving around $200 million on their AFL coverage over the next three years. Television companies had argued broadcast rights are worth less now than what they were previously because the AFL season has been shortened and the length of games have been reduced, while a lack of crowds has arguably reduced the quality of the broadcasts.

Seven West Media’s broadcasting rights deal for about 21 races in Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival expires on 30 June. These races include the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup. The Ten Network is believed to have expressed interest in gaining the rights to these race meetings, given that it already broadcasts the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival. Racing Victoria wants to renew its deal with Seven, although there is a push within the state’s racing industry for it to consider a bid from Ten. Seven and Racing Victoria are also joint venture partners in the Racing.com free-to-air TV channel.

Cut-price footy: TV chiefs muscle up

The Australian Football League will face pressure from Seven West Media and Foxtel for a reduction in their broadcasting rights fees for the 2020 season. They are believed to be seeking a fee reduction of at least $125m, given that the AFL’s shortened season will feature just 17 home-and-away matches. Meanwhile, the broadcasters differ on the revised structure of the season. Seven will push for a large number of ‘blockbuster’ matches to be held early in the season in order to attract advertisers and boost ratings, while Foxtel wants high-profile matches to be played throughout the season.

No deal with NRL: Nine boss

Original article by Leo Shanahan
The Australian – Page: 13 & 19 : 6-May-20

Nine Entertainment CEO Hugh Marks says the cost of sports broadcasting rights must become more sustainable in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He stresses that Nine has not reached an agreement with the National Rugby League regarding how much it will pay to broadcast the 2020 season. Nine had originally agreed to pay $118m for the 2020 rights, but it is believed to have offered about $90m after the NRL season was put on hold. Marks has indicated that Nine would be prepared to walk away from the NRL if it does not "pay its way". Nine’s current broadcasting rights deal expires in 2022.
