Nine Entertainment Company’s Peter Wiltshire believes that only about one per cent of Australians are using their Smart TV to access the internet. Along with the low-take-up rate of Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV – which was officially launched in Australia in mid-2014 – Wiltshire notes that the online catch-up services of free-to-air networks are not competing effectively with subscriber video-on-demand providers such as Netflix.

NBN’s Switkowski ‘simply wrong’ on broadcast view, says Free TV

Free TV Australia chairman Harold Mitchell has rejected claims by NBN chairman Ziggy Switkowski that people under the age of 20 mainly only watch sport on broadcast TV. Mitchell says traditional TV screens remain the primary viewing option for Australians of all ages, despite the growing use of other devices to watch content. The latest Multi-Screen report from Nielsen, OzTAM and Regional TAM found that Australians still use a traditional TV set to watch more than 90 hours of broadcast TV each month.

Cricket Australia has declined to comment on speculation that it is set to secure a deal with Optus regarding digital broadcasting rights, saying only that it is in talks with the telco. The deal is expected to cover cricket matches that were played prior to Cricket Australia’s current TV rights deal with Nine Entertainment Company. It is also believed that Optus customers will have free access to the Cricket Live app. Optus flagged a greater push into sports broadcasts earlier in 2015.

Netflix, Google ‘should invest in Aussie content’

Original article by Dominic White

Australia’s free-to-air and pay-TV industry is estimated to invest about $A3bn in content each year. The former Australian Labor Party’s Convergence Review in 2012 noted that free-to-air broadcasters invest 3-4 per cent of their revenue in local content. Screen Producers Australia and the ABC argue that subscription video-on-demand providers such as Netflix should have a similar obligation to invest in local content.

It is estimated that video content now comprises more than 50 per cent of all consumer traffic on Telstra’s fixed-line broadband network. The introduction of subscription video-on-demand services in particular has resulted in a sharp rise in Australian internet traffic, and now accounts for about 15 per cent of traffic on Telstra’s network. The so-called "Netflix effect" has prompted telcos to increase the capacity of their broadband networks.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 8-Sep-15

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 9.3 per cent of Australian households had access to Netflix in August 2015. This equates to more than 2.2 million Australians aged 14+. However, growth is slowing, with an additional 118,000 households subscribing to the subscription video on demand service in August. This is the lowest net gain since its first full month of Netflix’s local operations in April. It is the first time Netflix gained less than in the month before: it previously grew by 133,000 homes in May, 152,000 in June and 166,000 in July.

Netflix claims its first victim as EzyFlix bites the dust

Original article by Yolanda Redrup
The Australian Financial Review – Page: online : 20-Aug-15

Netflix, the newest entrant to the Australian TV and movie streaming market, has claimed its first victim with Australian-based Ezyflix closing this week. Ezyflix’s model of charging per download for films and TV shows rather than using a monthly subscription-based model like Netflix, Quickflix, Presto and Stan appears to have made Ezyflix price uncompetitive with its rivals. The latest Roy Morgan Research survey shows Netflix now reaches 1.89 million Australians in July, stunning growth considering Netflix only launched in Australia four months earlier in March.
