Workplace Relations Minister Craig Laundy has signalled that the Federal Government may consider amendments to the Fair Work Act aimed at providing greater protection to workers in the enterprise bargaining process. Laundy says there may be a case for strengthening existing provisions of the Act that require workers to be fully informed of the pay and conditions in an enterprise agreement before they vote for it. He has also warned of the potential for huge job losses if a future Labor government were to implements the ACTU’s proposals regarding the minimum wage and workplace laws.

Federal agencies to dodge union deals

Australian Public Service Commissioner John Lloyd says smaller government agencies are most likely to ditch enterprise agreements under the Coalition’s new policy on public sector bargaining. It allows departments and agencies to opt for alternative workplace arrangements such as common law employment contracts. Lloyd notes that unions tend to have greater influence on workplace negotiations in larger agencies, where enterprise agreements will most likely continue to prevail. The new policy has been criticised by Labor, which has raised the spectre of a return to the WorkChoices era.

PM switches to plan B on tax reform

The Senate is set to reject the Federal Government’s corporate tax cuts package after One Nation and the Nick Xenophon Team advised that they will vote against it. The two minor parties have a combined six seats in the Senate, and just three cross-benchers currently support the tax reforms. The lower house passed the company tax cuts bill on 8 February, and Treasurer Scott Morrison says the Government remains committed to getting the tax cuts through the Senate. However, the package’s looming defeat in the upper house will allow the Government to focus on personal income tax cuts in the May 2018 Budget.

Low inflation, low unemployment, and Lowe restraint

Original article by David Uren

Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe has indicated that an interest rate rise is now more likely than a rate cut. However, he says the central bank is unlikely to tighten monetary policy until inflation rises around the mid-point of its target range of 2-3 per cent and there is a further reduction in the unemployment rate. He has stressed that the Reserve Bank does not need to adjust monetary policy in line with other central banks. Lowe also says the Reserve Bank does not expect its inflation forecasts to be unduly affected by the recent sharemarket volatility.

15 million Australians read magazines across print & online

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 9-Feb-18

Roy Morgan has released the Australian Magazine Readership report for the 12 months to December 2017. A total of 12,565,000 Australians aged 14+ (62.5 per cent) read print magazines – down 93,000 (0.7 per cent) from a year ago. However, the audience reach of magazines is extended to 15 million Australians 14+ when you include magazine reading online (either via the web or an app). The withdrawal of major publishers from audited circulation results for magazines just over a year ago means Roy Morgan’s readership results continue to be the only truly independent measure of magazine performance now available. "Coles Magazine" remains the most widely-read print magazine, with an average readership of 4,152,000 per issue (up 11.3 per cent). Meanwhile, seven of Australia’s 10 leading magazines ranked by cross-platform audiences retain a significantly larger readership via their print editions than their digital offerings – a clear contrast to their print newspaper cousins, although this picture is slowly changing as more magazine publishers expand and refine their online offerings.

Clarke Wilkins of Citigroup says BHP Billiton’s market valuation could rise if its dual-listed structure is abolished, although he adds that a number of factors would determine the extent of any such upside. Activist hedge fund Elliott Management has reignited the debate on BHPs dual listing, calling for an independent review of the costs and benefits of shifting to a primary listing in Australia. Brenton Saunders of BT Financial Group and Andrew Preston of Aberdeen Standard Investment support Elliott’s proposal.

Australian investors returned to the sharemarket on 8 February, seeking buying opportunities among stocks that had been heavily sold down in the recent sharemarket rout. Blue-chip stocks in particular attracted buying activity. However, investors should be mindful that financial market volatility can persist for some time, and the pace at which the US Federal Reserve tightens monetary policy will be a key factor in the outlook for equities.

Catalano conduct raised two years ago

Original article by Joyce Moullakis, Aaron Patrick
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 7 : 8-Feb-18

Sources have alleged that Domain Holdings’ human resources department had received a complaint about the conduct of former CEO Antony Catalano in early 2016. Amongst other things, a Domain executive is said to have lodged a complaint about Catalano’s behaviour, the "blokey" culture at the property listings group and the promotion of a female intern to a permanent position. Catalano is said to have been aware of the complaint and subsequently asked the executive to leave, although sources within Domain claim that this was due to performance reasons.
